DIY Pop-Up Art and Music Event in Downtown Elberta
Saturday, August 23, 2025 | 4–7 PM | Studio 231, 108 Sheridan St, Elberta
Elberta, MI – WUWU Community Radio and the Elberta Labor Heritage Center invite everyone to take part in Building the Commons – Elberta, a hands-on celebration of creativity, collaboration, and community. This pop-up art and music event will take place on Saturday, August 23 from 4 to 7 PM at Studio 231, located at 108 Sheridan Street in downtown Elberta.
At the heart of the event is a community mural project led by Michigan-based artist Ellen Rutt, with support from local creatives at the Sawbill Surf Club. As a multidisciplinary artist, Rutt’s work is rooted in the core belief that art enables discovery and transformation and can be a pathway toward more equitable, regenerative communal futures. Driven by her commitment to community and place-making, Rutt has over 10 years of experience in public art and has exhibited work with the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, Detroit Institute of Arts, Albright Knox Museum, Library Street Collective, The Urban Institute of Contemporary Art Grand Rapids, East Hawaii Museum of Contemporary Art, and has completed murals and installations around the world in France, New York, San Francisco, Canada, and Hawaii among others.
The event organizers have been granted access to the open space next to the studio and want to fill it with DIY arts and crafts activities, a tie-dye station, and a participatory music jam (think: communal rhythm or song circle, not staged performance). Whether you’re a painter, drummer, knitter, or creative dabbler—we want YOU there to help build the magic.
This is more than an event—it’s the beginning of something we hope to grow. It’s a chance to be part of the foundation of a new creative tradition in Elberta. You don't need to be an artist to participate—just bring your energy and curiosity.
CALLING ALL ARTISTS & MUSICIANS:
If you’d like to contribute an activity, guide a craft, help run the tie-dye station, or jam with others, please contact WUWU at [email protected].
Come one, come all. Let’s co-create a joyful, grassroots experience right in the heart of Elberta. Let’s build the commons—together.
