Walk into the museum on Commercial Street and the first thing you notice isn't the saddles or the silver โ€” it's the building itself. Built in 1907 for G.S. Garcia's saddle and harness shop, it stood for decades doing other work, waiting, as old buildings do, for someone to remember what it was for.

Paula Bear Wright remembered. She'd talked about a museum in that building for years โ€” a place to hold onto the saddles, the bits, the rawhide work, the whole vaquero-buckaroo-cowboy lineage that runs through the Great Basin. It was the kind of dream people talk about at brandings and family dinners for years before it ever becomes real.

Paula didn't get to see it finished. But her son John, his wife Susan, and a community that believed in the dream as much as she did got it done anyway.

Today, the Cowboy Arts & Gear Museum is exactly what Paula pictured โ€” workshops teaching the old trades to new hands, contests that grow a little stronger every year, and now two auctions that fund both the museum and the makers who keep this work alive.
