Met Gala: The Muppet Show
Originally I wanted to have Statler and Waldorf be their own design. I loved the idea of the Carol Burnett “Went with the Wind” Curtain dress designed by Bob Mackie in the red velvet of the Muppet Show theater. The ideas was to have the curtains to open to see a dress with their faces all over it, I had envisioned the Marilyn Monroe and James Dean Versace inspired dress. I even designed the fabric (but I just never had it printed)
Over the months leading up to me starting to actually create the gowns I realized as much as I wanted to be and represent Statler and Waldor, I am not funny like them and the idea of trying to emulate them with insult comedy terrified me. I know to cosplay a character you *don’t* have to act like them but I knew that it would come out of me whether I liked it or not and I didn’t want to actually be rude to anybody
At some point I was lamenting all of that Muppet characters that I couldn’t include because there were only seven of us able to go to the Mousequerade and I don’t even remember how but I decided that the curtain would open to the arches during the Muppet Show Theme Song and I could include as many Muppets as I wanted!
My friend Kati Treu drew the arches for me and from there I designed the repeating fabric pattern with over 80 different Muppets! I included all of the popular favorites and I put some deep cuts in there too. There is one puppet that isn’t an official Muppet but I had to do it because my brain told me I had to. Can you see who it is?
From there I had the fabric custom printed from Spoonflower | wallpaper, fabric + home decor and I had to design a skirt so all of the arches lined up and I realized I wanted it to be lit from behind so I spent 8 hours hot gluing very lights to my skirt because it diffused the light in a very pretty way that hand sewing them in just couldn’t capture.
I still had to include Statler and Waldorf because what is the Muppet Show if it’s not being roasted by them? I found a 3D design pattern for magnets for them I scaled up I texturized them I had painted them so lovingly just for them to spend the whole show mocking me.
