It is a commonly accepted fact that the moon controls the Earth’s tides and supports a more stable axis on which our planet turns. As a result, our seasons and weather are generally predictable and follow known patterns. The ocean tides are also fairly predictable in pattern due to the moon: she controls the Earth’s bodies of water and within our own bodies, too.

The direct connection between the moon and water is translated in spiritual practices to embody emotion, intuition, memories and healing. Water is flowing and cleansing, but if it is forced or slowed it becomes solid ice or boiling water. Hence these themes are best accessed by way of a flowing mindset.

We know in modern times that the moon’s glow originates from our Sun and she reflects this light (or lack thereof) back to our earthly point of view. The phases also represent where the moon lies in relation to the earth and the sun. This relationship determines exactly how the water on our planet is manipulated.

Ancient people recognized this link and they planned their planting / harvesting phases accordingly. So when the New Moon is above us, it is a time that water is pulled to the surface of the soil: hence a very ideal time to plant seeds because this increased surface moisture causes seeds to swell and begin a successful germination phase. The New Moon in astrology and witchcraft follows a similar pathway for spiritual purposes, too.

You may read that a New Moon is “a time to plant seeds of intention.” Like literal seeds in the earth with promise of direction and growth, the New Moon offers a time of new beginnings, inner reflection and evaluation of the path ahead for growth of your planted seeds.
