It was a day to remember. The 1979 Nike/Oregon Track Club Marathon was called “A Gathering of Eagles”. Athletics West teammates Tony Sandoval and Jeff Wells tied for first place on the track at Hayward Field. Their time - 2:10:20. Joan Benoit won the women’s race in 2:35:41. 689 runners finished, 50 runners broke 2:22, 351 runners broke 3 hours, 45 athletes qualified for the United States Olympic Trials Marathon.
