Wedding Gown Refashion

Mom’s 1940 gown was refashioned into 4 handbags for her daughters and 9 ornaments for her granddaughters.

She is gone, but her memory lives on through these momentos from her wedding gown, vintage photos and costume jewelry.

I was so honored her daughter trusted me to bring this project to life for their upcoming family reunion.

The gift bags were important too. Presentation matters! They were created from wallpaper samples.

I say this all of the time, but today it was especially true…I’m not sure who gets more out of my sewing classes, me or those taking the class.
Thanks Stephanie, Amy, Bianca and Leeda for your good energy today. I look forward to our next class together.

If you missed signing up for this week’s class, check out this up cycled tablecloth top! Easy peasey!

Bridesmaid’s Alterations

Thanks to Jordan for bringing in her bridesmaid dress for alterations. It was a typical Azazie hem with three layers of hem work & it needed to be taken in at the sides which included all the linings too.

She looks lovely in her fuscia dress!

This is how it started and this is how it’s going. So happy to work with this great mother and daughter on a sentimental refashion. It started as mom’s vintage wedding dress with a long train, long sleeves and several sizes too small. But the bride certainly looked stunning at her rehearsal dinner with the dress modernized and tailored just for her.

It’s not always just a “simple” hemming job. Many brands use micro-fabrics that are super comfy and stretchy, but their density of fabric is hard to pierce through on a sewing machine. They were sewn together on a factory machine that is different from the lighter weight industrial sewing machines I own.

These are Quince brand pants and I needed to use a size 60 or 70 needle, which is finer. The stitches needed to be longer and a stabilizer is needed to sew the hem. I used cut strips of parchment paper for my stabilizer. When approaching the multiple thicknesses in the side seams, I hand cranked the fly wheel on the machine for a stitches to be formed.

After, I cut away as much parchment paper as possible. If I tore it away, it would ruin the stitches I just sewed. There still may be a thin line of paper held in place by the stitches, but it will eventually come out with a few washes.

Salvaging Custom Fabric Scraps

“A Star 🌟 Is Born Under the Theatre Lights” This USI print was designed from the light fixture in the theatre lobby, crafted from rocking chair legs.

Printing custom fabric is expensive, so I decided to salvage these organic cotton sateen scraps from my bomber jacket in the recent ‘ Locality’ exhibit in New Harmony.

The fabric is combined with denim. Cotton macrame wristlets will be added on the side. All are one-of-a-kind and are available for $68. DM me if you are interested in purchasing one. Perfect for the theatre lover!
