Long before grocery stores, Native Hawaiians engineered massive fishponds called loko i`a that could feed entire communities year-round.

Their stone walls, called kuapā, stretched across shallow coastal areas and had small gates to allow young fish to swim into the pond while keeping larger fish inside for harvesting.

Today, restoration efforts across Hawai`i are helping preserve this living legacy for future generations.

Most people know Hawai`i as a place.
But have you ever wondered what the word Hawai`i itself means?

One interpretation breaks the name into three parts:
HA — breath, the breath of life
WAI — fresh water, the source of life
I — the divine, the original consciousness, the source

Together, Native Hawaiian culture teaches that life flows from spirit, through water, into all living things.

Whether you view it as language, history, or philosophy, it's a beautiful way to think about these islands.
