I am and have always been a xenophile-one who is attracted to and appreciates foreign people, cultures and customs. I would like to encourage people to see the world as a whole, as interrelated cultures-pieces in a puzzle. We need all the pieces to see the big picture. Thus, just a reminder that all of our present day arts, performing arts and crafts were gifted to us by our world-wide ancestors. We continue to develop and enjoy their gifts which they discovered and saw the value of in the natural world around them. Thankfully, we all continue to share these ancient gifts today. Let’s honor our global artisans, artists and performing artists for carrying on humankind’s beautiful world traditions. This is what Arte&Factum is about: showing respect and admiration for all cultures and all aspects of world beauty-“with skill”&”made”.

To celebrate the upcoming lunar new year here is Mariani, the first in a series of Doulton limited edition plates—Festival Children of the World—by the renowned artist Brenda Burke. Made in the USA in a worldwide edition of 15,000 it comes with a certificate of authenticity attested to by the artist in 1983 in Hastings, England.

Bodhi Day falls on Dec.30th this year and is a sacred celebration for Buddhists around the world as it marks the date of Siddhartha’s enlightenment.
This relief is from the magnificent ancient temple (and pagodas) of Borobudur on the island of Java in Indonesia. It is a UNESCO Heritage Site which I had the good fortune of visiting in my youth. An inspiring testament, I feel, to the power of belief.

The traditional Chinese celebration, Laba, literally means 8th day of the 12th lunar month and falls on Dec.30th this year. Thus, extensive preparations for the 2023 Spring Festival, celebrating lunar new year, begin tomorrow and lead up to lunar new year’s day on January 22nd. Although it is called Chinese new year in the West, lunar new year is celebrated in many cultures which still use the ancient lunar calendar in their every day lives. I hope you will join me in wishing our Asian friends here in the U.S. and around the world a very happy new year!
