For those I have not met, I thought I’d take a moment to introduce myself—my name is Ruby and I am the one behind the sewing machine.
It’s kind of a long story, but it was my love of history that eventually led me to start my own sewing business: Orange Cat LLC. I’ve loved history for as long as I can remember. When I was about eight years old, I started making my own clothes and costumes, and by the time I was 15, I had drafted and completed my first victorian gown. I’ve used this creativity over the years to outfit my hobby as a Victorian reenactor.
As I was completing my degree in history, I took on an apprenticeship with a tailor—I thought it might make me a better dressmaker. Instead, I found myself in the world of men’s formal wear. I loved it. I loved the fine details and the intricate art of tailoring—I loved being able to help men and women achieve that finished look for some of the most important days of their lives—interviews, weddings, funerals, etc.
These days, the bulk of what I do is alterations and restorations. Though I do plan to expand Orange Cat into a retail business as well—as I have a lot of my own designs I’d like to share with the world. The work I do with Orange Cat allows me to blend my passion for sewing and history in such a way that is tactile and fulfilling. It has also allowed me to work from home so that I can be there for my family in the most important ways. When you support my small business, you’re helping me stay home with my daughter to give her the best possible start in life.
And if you’re curious about the orange cat, I’ll be introducing him next. Stay tuned for our adventures to come!
