✨ Unfiltered Sleep Training Thoughts That Probably Need to Be Said!! ✨
Sleep training has somehow become one of the most controversial topics in parenting, and honestly? A lot of the information floating around simply isn't true.
Let's clear up a few things. 👇
✨ Sleep training is NOT one-size-fits-all.
There are dozens of approaches. Some families prefer a gradual approach with lots of parental involvement. Some prefer a faster method. Some focus on schedules and routines before ever working on independent sleep. A good sleep plan should be tailored to the child *and* the family.
✨ Sleep training does NOT automatically mean "cry it out."
In fact, many families I work with never use a traditional cry-it-out method at all. There are gentle, responsive methods that allow parents to remain present and supportive while teaching new sleep skills.
✨ Responding to your child and teaching sleep skills can coexist.
You can be a loving, attached, responsive parent while also helping your child learn to sleep independently. The two are not mutually exclusive.
✨ Sleep is a biological need, not a luxury.
Children do some of their most important work while sleeping:
🧠 Brain development
📚 Learning and memory consolidation
💪 Physical growth
❤️ Emotional regulation
🦠 Immune system support
Sleep isn't just important for babies—it's important for toddlers, preschoolers, school-aged children, and adults too.
✨ Parents matter too.
Sleep deprivation affects mood, patience, mental health, relationships, work performance, and overall well-being.
A well-rested parent is often a more present parent.
✨ Sleep training doesn't mean you're "giving up."
Many families seek support because they're exhausted, struggling, or simply want to improve their child's sleep habits. Asking for help doesn't make you selfish. It doesn't mean you're choosing convenience over connection.
It means you're trying to meet your family's needs.
At the end of the day, every family gets to decide what's right for them.
If co-sleeping works for your family and everyone is sleeping well—great.
If rocking to sleep works for your family and everyone is happy—great.
If teaching independent sleep works for your family—great.
The goal isn't to parent exactly like someone else.
The goal is healthy sleep, healthy attachment, and a healthy family. ❤️
And sometimes, helping a child learn to sleep is one of the most loving things we can do for them. 🌙✨
I know my 60+ families who now have babies/toddlers with great sleep habits can agree 🤍
