Alabama Chanin

Alabama Chanin Organically and ethically produced, thoughtfully designed, women's fashion, home, and tabletop. Alabama Chanin retains the same intention and integrity today.

Alabama Chanin is a lifestyle company producing well-designed and thoughtfully-made goods for the person and the home in our community in Florence, Alabama. We use 100% organic cotton jersey fabric in our designs, sourced sustainably from seed to fabric—along with repurposed and reclaimed materials. The company that has become what Alabama Chanin is today began early in 2000 with the creation of h

and-sewn garments made from cotton jersey fabric by Natalie Chanin. Heirloom pieces are made from 100% organic cotton, sewn by hand through a group of talented artisans who each run their own business, in their own time, and in their own way. The company maintains sustainable practices—across its disciplines—and creates sustainable products, holding ourselves to the highest standards for quality. We are makers and educators, working to elevate and
merge design, craft, and fashion. Made in the USA, Alabama Chanin is a leader in slow design and elevated craft due to a strong belief in tradition, dedication to locally-sewn garments and goods—both hand- and machine-sewn—alongside strict principles of sustainability and lean method production. At Alabama Chanin, we preserve traditions of community, design, producing, and living arts by examining work and life through the acts of storytelling, photography, education, and making. "This is the work of many hands."
— Natalie Chanin

With access to rapidly-produced goods at our fingertips, the domestic arts are becoming lost in the hustle, and fashion is becoming disposable.

We're offering a different way, using sustainable materials and hand-craft to create garments unparalleled in both beauty and quality.

Our organic cotton is grown using natural biological cycles and without harmful chemicals that can negatively affect wildlife and people. It accounts for roughly 1-2% of cotton worldwide, with only a fraction of production occurring in the United States. Since 2004, we’ve partnered with the Texas Organic Cotton Marketing Cooperative (a USDA- and GOTS-certified collective) to create our signature jersey and waffle fabrics.

From Texas, where the cotton is also ginned, it goes to North Carolina to be spun into yarn. Then it’s on to South Carolina for knitting, where it’s received by a fourth-generation, family-owned company that’s been in operation since 1938. The fabric is dyed in South Carolina, as well, using cold-process, environmentally-friendly dyes. The finished fabric then arrives at The Factory.

Garments begin to take shape in our cutting department, where each piece is cut by hand using in-house patterns. If a design calls for it, pieces are hand-painted with custom stencils before moving on to sewing. Hand-sewn styles are sent out with local artisans, while machine-sewn styles go to the sewing department. Once assembled, each piece is washed, carefully inspected, and shipped.

Every step takes place in the U.S., with people and planet at the forefront.

The Maker Lab is officially underway.

In early April, Project Threadways gathered local community leaders in the Shoals to celebrate the beginning of construction at The Maker Lab, a new organizational headquarters, artisan studio, and community space in downtown Florence. First step: a roof, just completed this week.

This work is the result of a year-long capital campaign, which met a Phase One fundraising goal of $2.8 million in 2025. We are deeply grateful to the public agencies, private foundations, and individual donors who make this future possible, and those partners and collaborators who champion Project Threadways’ mission.

This moment also marks the beginning of Phase Two of the campaign, which aims to raise $1.5 million to furnish and outfit the space. Funds raised in the months ahead will be directed toward:

- A fully equipped kitchen to service community events.
- ADA-accessible seating and tables.
- Lighting for workshops and hands-on educational activities.
- A showroom for sustainable, artisan-made pieces.
- Event and exhibition spaces for storytelling around craft and community.

The Maker Lab will open its doors this fall (more soon). Mark your calendar for the Opening Gala on March 20, 2027.

Please join us in this next chapter to expand access, deepen impact, and carry the work of artisan making forward for generations to come.

“Hope is very different than optimism…
Hope is a muscle, hope is when you fight.”
— Jane Fonda, 2026

The next edition of the World Hope Forum features Natalie, alongside an international group of leaders whose work spans civil justice, social activism, environmental conservation, handcraft preservation, and multicultural awareness.

This free virtual event brings together voices we look to as heroes—individuals whose work demonstrates how commitment, creativity, and advocacy can shape a more thoughtful and equitable future. At a time when hope itself is challenged on a daily basis, their efforts remind us of the importance of defending those in need while remaining focused on long-term paths forward.

Perianth (noun): "envelope of a flower"

Inspired by the often bright and fragrant outer parts of a flower, Perianth is the second of two new fabrics from Collection #72. The design offers an abstraction of the classic floral motif, deconstructing flower shapes into a mosaic of figures.

Variations feature mixed metallic paints, glass beading, and assorted embroidery and appliqué on navy or tea-dyed fabric. Each garment and its technique are artisan-crafted by hand.

The intersection of art and geometry.

Fields is one of two new fabrics from Collection #72, the latest release from Alabama Chanin. Hand-painted rectangles form the foundation of the design, each one artfully layered using earth tones on tea-dyed fabric or metallic paint on navy fabric.

Variations include the all-over painted motif, beaded and sequined accents, and embroidered appliqué. As always, garment construction and fabric techniques are crafted mindfully by hand.
