When I started Suit Guy, I honestly did not think that I would ever open up a retail environment, let alone a private showroom. But as usual, God has better plans, and here I am! I used to spend hours at my home studio in my sewing room sewing away and meeting with clients in our front room, and for a time it was perfect. As I grew Suit Guy, I found that the swatches that I have, the try on garments, and the overall aesthetic of Suit Guy expanded and morphed into more than I could run out of my home. Since I opened up the showroom this February I’ve experienced an incredible amount of support, and far more clients than I ever had working out of my home studio. To say that I’m blessed is an absolute understatement, but ultimately it’s not just a blessing of success, it’s a blessing that I’ve got to meet so many different people from so many different walks of life and make them custom clothing that is as unique as they are.

I’ve learned that perfection is not possible, but it’s worth striving for.

Fabric is not something that you can coerce into submissiveness, but coaxed into showing its natural beauty.

Cheap cloth is like painting with sandpaper as your canvas; no matter how good your technique is, it’s probably going to look like garbage when it’s done.

People don’t pay you for fair market value, they pay you because you’re as good as you are, and they can trust you. The burden, then, is not on them to trust, but for you to be worthy of it.

One compromise leads to another and is like poison. It spreads and spoils everything you’ve worked for. So you don’t compromise. You always give it your best because great garments can be made anywhere; but they don’t have your heart and soul behind them.

The young generation that’s growing up may very well turn out to be the greatest generation of tailors the world has ever seen. But they have to be nurtured, they have to be taught, and they have to be given a chance.

And finally, but of no lesser importance, the God given skill to every seamstress, tailor and cutter is worth honing until the day you die. Because you can always be better than you were the day before.

Have you ever felt inadequate? Yeah, me too. I’ve measured myself against every one of my competitors, and each time I always concluded that they’re better than me in some way. That I’m not good enough.

But suddenly that changed. Why?

It’s not that I used to look down upon myself; it’s that I got caught up in the comparisons of follower or like count, the popularity contests, the “why didn’t I think of that?” moments that kept me up at night, or woke me up at 3 am in a cold sweat feeling like throwing in the towel.

That I’d never be as good as them. That my failure was guaranteed. It ate me alive, and for a while, made me bitter.

But I had to stop. I had to stop and consider what they felt like. There’s a near 100% chance the person I’m worried about feels the same way as me. Things aren’t easy for them, either. Maybe the stress is different, or maybe it’s worse.

I realized that if I spent any more time comparing myself to the competition, I’d never be able to gauge what really makes for an awesome experience for my clients. I’d never be able to focus on what really matters.

I realized this the hard way, so hopefully you don’t have to. Pray often and pray hard. Stop comparing yourself to someone because you’ll never be able to compete with the monster you make in your head.
