Suzi Went Pickin' Vintage and Eclectic

Suzi Went Pickin' Vintage and Eclectic Many times when you ask my husband, "Where's Suzi?" his reply is "She went pickin!" hence the name.

"Suzi Went Pickin" Vintage & Eclectic: collectibles, eclectic, unique, handcrafted, previously loved items, lots of ideas and information offered to you to brighten your day. I've been buying and selling since the ripe old age of 8 and to me, it is therapy. If I can find a treasure and offer it back to you and make your day, then it's been a good day. While I have a shopspace at Atlantis Antiques in Fort Pierce, Florida, I do offer items directly from me to you.

Feeling nostalgic lately at "Suzi Went Pickin'" This daddy's girl has unearthed some of the writings of Doug James and "Atlantic Beach Press" a company that he and I founded in the early 2000's publishing a buyer's guide to PBN. At one point Daddy, "Doug" was said to have one of the largest Paint by Number Collections in the country and he, himself, found the elusive Queen Elizabth Paint by Number setting the PBN collector world on it's ear!
Please visit this Paint by Number Museum website to see Doug's collection as well as the works of Dan Robbins, the Guru himself. More to come.... Any questions?

Vintage Photos are right there at the top of my list of favorite things to find and collect. You may not know WHO the sweet folks are in those wonderful old photos but as they say "Every picture tells a story." Find some favorites and frame 'em up and "instant story" or even "instant family":

Eula May learned to knit at an early age. She learned from her grandmother Evans on her daddy's side. Each day, she would sit and knit and rock in her chair. "You're old before your time" her daddy would say.

Eula May grew up next to Joey Dean. He was a mechanic from Day One. That boy could fix just about anything and when Eula May started making her knitting deliveries when she learned to drive at the age of 10, Joey Dean would often work on her car for her if it was having some problems.

Years later, they've married and Eula May has kept Joey Dean warm with lovely hand knit hats, scarves, gloves, and sweaters for over 50 years. Joey Dean gleams with pride Eula pulls up in her well running automobile. Eula May beams when Joey wears one of his many hand knit sweaters, just not while he's under the hood. "Sometimes our relationship becomes a little unraveled, Eula says, but I can we always knit it back together and then Joey Dean uses some of that car glue of his and it all fits right back together like it should."

Eula May has been the Mississippi State Knitting Chamption for 18 years running and the President of the Stitch & Bi****rs of Greater Mississippi for 22 years. Johnny Dean is the president of the Auto Mechanics Union, and has owned his own garage for now on 40 years. He and Eula May have 7 children, and 12 grandchildren.

Photos below: Eula May with her knitting and her cat Foster; Joey Dean fixing one of Eula May's first cars.

A little Paint By Number History: This little gem is called Abstract #1 and was designed by Dan Robbins, considered to be the "inventor" of Paint By Numbers, for Palmer Paint Compnay, in the late 40's.

In Dan's words: "During the early 1940''s, Modern Art was at the height of its popularity in this country. So it seemed logical that the very first paint by number subject should reflect that art style. With a little touch of Picasso, a little of Brach, and a lot of Robbins, Abstract No.1 was created. Unfortunately , the subject proved to be a little too "arty" for the public at large who referred pretty landscapes, colorful flowers, and cute pets." (as quoted in " ...by the numbers" newsletter published by Atlantic Beach Press 2003).

More on PBN's to come.
