79 years ago today, the G-E Voltmen brought a national championship home to Fort Wayne.

On September 2, 1947, the Voltmen defeated Golden Coors to capture the National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita, Kansas. It was Fort Wayne’s first national semi-pro baseball championship—and the beginning of three consecutive titles under the Voltmen name.

That remarkable run would eventually reach four straight championships for Fort Wayne, with the club competing as the Fort Wayne Capeharts in 1950.

Today, we remember the team that started it all.

That’s me, about nine years old, taking part in a baseball clinic on the field at Memorial Stadium.

At the time, it was simply a chance to play on a real professional field. Looking back now, it feels like one of the many small experiences that built my connection to baseball in Fort Wayne.

That was part of what made The Castle special. It wasn’t only where we watched the Wizards play—it gave local kids a place to feel connected to the game in their own city.

Those memories are still at the heart of Old Fort and why we believe local baseball is worth celebrating and preserving.

For generations, Friday nights have brought neighborhoods, schools and communities across Fort Wayne together.

These designs are our small way of celebrating some of that history — the colors, mascots and places that have become part of the fabric of the city.
