It's time for the Frankenmuth Woolen Mill Wayback Wednesday Post!

This truck is loaded with bags of wool fresh off the train and headed to Frankenmuth Woolen Mill.

When the rail depot opened in 1882, it was known as "Frankenmuth Station" and was built four miles north of town because early Frankenmuth residents preferred to avoid the noise and disruption of a passing train. The depot sat along the Pere Marquette line connecting East Saginaw and Port Huron, creating an important link between local farmers and businesses.

By 1894—the same year Frankenmuth Woolen Mill opened its doors—the depot and surrounding settlement were renamed Gera, after a city in Germany. The station provided out of town sheep farmers an efficient way to ship their wool, and photos like this show that wool arriving by rail before making the short trip back to the mill for processing.
