Oh my god, it’s finally done! I looked through all my fabric receipts and turns out I started this costume September 18th, 2019. I can’t believe I’ve been working on this on and off for six months and now it’s finally finished!
Here’s my notes on the process:
Breeches:
The big front flap technically needs plackets but looks fine w/o them.
The small front flaps were a nuisance to try and sew on, the seam allowance was so narrow.
I had to alter the pattern piece to get the butt to be baggy enough.
Actually I had to alter the whole pattern to be more historically accurate. The legs were way too long and had no bands on the bottom, the waistband was too narrow, there was no gusset in the back, the butt wasn’t baggy enough and I had to blend two pattern sizes together because of my measurements (I guess that last one is more on me than the pattern.)
Shirt and vest:
These two patterns hardly had to be altered at all; the base sizes fit perfectly.
All I had to do on the shirt was use a size M collar on an XS shirt, shorten the sleeves a bit, and make smaller cuffs.
On the vest I just had to add a collar, cut the bottom shorter and add the fake pockets.
I know they’re supposed to be shot-through and bloody but I plan on wearing them out of costume so I left them alone.
Other stuff:
The laces for the breeches and vest are just some shoelaces I had lying around and happened to be the perfect color.
I finally learned how to make button-holes on my machine for this, never mind the historical inaccuracy.
The eyelets for the laces and buckles were the only thing I hand-sewed and I think they came out pretty good.
It doesn’t show very well in the pictures, but the vest is actually closer to a chocolate brown and the swirls are pink and gold.
I couldn’t find any green ribbon that matched so I made my own out of some satin.
