One of the things I love most about Bella Rosa is I get to spend time in one of Galena's beautiful historic buildings. On Saturday, I learned even more about its story.
A historic plaque was installed at Bella Rosa, commemorating Alexander C. Davis, who built this building around 1846.
Alexander came to Galena from Lynchburg, Virginia, as a 19-year-old young man looking for opportunity. Through hard work and determination, he built a successful life here, becoming involved in mining, business, land investments, and even helping organize what would become the Galena & Southern Wisconsin Railroad.
But what really captured my attention was the story of his wife, Helen.
Helen Marie Little arrived in Galena when she was just 12 years old. She married Alexander at Grace Episcopal Church when she was just 14 years old, and together they raised 14 children. When Alexander passed away in 1866 at only 48 years old, Helen was left to carry on and raise their family. A family history written years later described her as intelligent, devoted, and strong. As a wife, mother, and business owner myself, I can't help but admire what she accomplished during a very different time in history!
Steve and I feel incredibly fortunate to be the caretakers of this building for a small part of its long story. We are grateful to Galena's Living History Alliance for helping preserve the history of Galena and for sharing the stories of the people who built this wonderful community.
The next time you stop by Bella Rosa, take a minute to look for the plaque near our entrance. It's a reminder that long before our racks were filled with beautiful Italian fashions, this building was part of another family's dream, and their story is still worth remembering.
