I always wondered what this part of Psalm 23 meant. I thought “He anoints my head with oil” was figurative language for God keeping the Psalmist healthy. I never knew this parallel.
Sheep can get their head caught in briers and die trying to get untangled. There are horrid little flies that like to torment sheep by laying eggs in their nostrils which turn into worms and drive the sheep to beat their head against a rock, sometimes to death. Their ears and eyes are also susceptible to tormenting insects.
So, the shepherd anoints their whole head with oil. Then there is peace. That oil forms a barrier of protection against the evil that tries to destroy the sheep.
Do you have times of mental torment? Do worrisome thoughts invade your mind over and over? Do you beat your head against a wall trying to stop them? Have you ever asked God to anoint your head with oil? He has an endless supply! His oil protects and makes it possible for you to fix your heart, mind, and eyes on Him today and always! Apostle’s Creed tells us that Jesus took His victory over death into the bowels of death itself. He proclaimed the triumph of the cross in the presence of Satan and the demonic realm.
While the world sat in darkness and despair, Jesus had already beaten death. In Jerusalem, all that could be seen was the tomb, the soldiers, the disciples’ grief and fear, and the empty cross. What they did not see, what they could not yet believe, was the victorious Jesus. Their fear was fixed on what was seen; failure, hopelessness, loss, and death. And they trusted more in what was seen than what was unseen. They despaired over what seemed so real and ignored what was promised.
Jesus is conquering death and evil even while we wait. This is the hope of Holy Saturday. It is the ultimate experience of the faithful steward who has died, whose life is now “hidden with Christ in God,” who lives for Christ because Christ lives in him. This is the final step of trust and humble service on this journey through Holy Week. Embrace it and invite all around you to join you on this journey. God is on His throne, evil has been defeated, Jesus is victor and Sunday is coming!

Hey Friends! God is working! We received our first request for a Bible from our post yesterday. A seventeen year old young man wants to know more about our Lord. His grandmother reached out and asked if we can find him a Bible. We need your help, do I have anyone out there with a Bible or Bibles they are not using? If you would like to make a donation to our Bible Donation fund you can do that as well. Just send a message for the details. Let’s get the Word into every person’s hand that wants one. Be a part of spreading God’s Word and planting those seeds. ”Be a fisher of men.”
