"But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content."
1 Timothy 6:6-8 ESV
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We dwell in a society and culture that feeds our desires for more. More more more.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Your phone isn't good enough, you need a new one.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Your car is old, you need a new one.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You shoes are worn down, you need new ones.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I don't have enough money yet to be content with where I am.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My house isn't big enough.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My social following isn't big enough.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You catch the point?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If we don't become aware of our unhealthy desire of tangible or even intangible things that compromise our emotions and contentment, we will live in an endless cycle as a slave to our own flesh. We will never find rest.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Is it sinful to desire new things? By no means. But when we fail to be grateful for the things we have now, and give God praise for what he already has given us, we will never be content or thankful for what we have, no matter how much we get.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I've also come to see that those who fail to be grateful for what they have never seem to get more.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Scripture tells us the story of the talents. A master gave three servants talents (money) and left, hoping they would do something with it. The ones who doubled the money he was very pleased with, but the one who did nothing and buried it, he was furious. Why?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
He wasted what was already in front of him.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You of course can strive for more, but if you can't remember the last time vou thanked God for evervthing vou already have and live out that out in your actions, then maybe you should do a heart check.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Be grateful for what you have before you strive for the next.
