Dear Saturday,

You're about to get a makeover.

Starting this fall, Saturday afternoons at Dear Garment House will be home to Fashion Lab Days hosted by Columbus Fashion Academy and featuring rotating hands-on workshops with real materials, guest artists, and a room full of curious learners treating fabric like the raw material of something important.

No screens. No passive learning. Just hands, ideas, and the very specific magic that happens when a child (or even adult sometimes) discovers they can make something beautiful.

Pre-register online. Walk-ins welcome if space allows. No long-term commitment required for Lab Days β€” just book when schedule works and make something.

First one is October 17th, Fun Embroidery with Nancy and Michelle. We're keeping it intentional and intimate (8 spots). Reserve your seat ASAP. 🧡

Dear Every Parent Who Has Watched Their Child Walk a Runway,

There is no photo that prepares you for it.

You know what they put in. You were in the car for the Saturday sessions. You heard about the fabric that didn't cooperate, the seam that had to be ripped out, the Tuesday they came home tired but wouldn't quit.

And then you watch them walk. And something shifts.

That's not just pride you're feeling. That's the moment you realize your child is more capable than even you knew.

This is what Columbus Fashion Academy builds toward β€” a real runway, a finished garment, a child who knows what it feels like to do hard things.

Dear Garment House opens in one month. Evening and weekend cohorts start October 5th. The runway is waiting.

🎭 Taylor Thrift is getting married this Monday and we need you there.

Three years ago, she was born right here at Columbus Fashion Academy, a puppet with a paper machΓ© head and a dress made from fabric scraps saved from the landfill.

Year 1: Taylor was single.
Year 2: She got engaged. (We snuck back into the studio and added the ring ourselves. πŸ’)
Year 3: This Monday, Taylor arrives as a married woman β€” dressed in a bridal gown made from deadstock lace that would have been thrown away, with a vintage veil and every detail made by hand. Zero waste. All heart.

But here's the thing, this post isn't really about Taylor.

It's about the people who stayed up cutting 1,000 felt circles by hand so YOUR family could come make a puppet this Monday. It's about the joy of working with people who believe in something so much they do it without being asked. No agenda. No camera rolling.

That's the kind of joy we want to share with you this Labor Day. 🌟

πŸŽ‰ Come make a puppet with us!
πŸ“ Upper Arlington Labor Day Festival presented by UA Rec & Parks UA City
πŸ“… Monday, September 7 | 10am–5pm
🎭 Puppet Show Performances: 12pm & 3pm
βœ‚οΈ FREE β€” open to ALL ages
(Yes, adults too. We all get dressed every day. Come style!)

Your family gets to dress a puppet. Design their outfit. Tell their story. Every scrap of fabric used is upcycled and repurposed.

Come find your joy on Monday. Taylor will be there, dressed for her moment. And so will we. πŸ’›

Tag a neighbor, a friend, a mom group, a grandparent; this one is for everyone.

And if you can't make it Monday β€” stay tuned! Our new home, Dear Garment House on Grandview Ave, opens this Fall. The puppets have already named every window.

Dear Kid Who Said "I'm Not Sure what I'm Good at,"

Let's find out! We invite you to join us at Dear Garment House, where Columbus Fashion Academy will be offering many programs and I'm not talking about just sewing.

You'll learn how to hold a big idea in your head while your hands are doing something completely different. (Scientists call that working memory. We call it designing.)

You'll learn what to do when the fabric doesn't cooperate, the color isn't right, and your original plan falls apart. (Scientists call that cognitive flexibility. We call it Tuesday.)

You'll learn to slow down when every instinct tells you to rush β€” to trust the process even when you can't see the finish line yet. (Scientists call that inhibitory control. We call it precision.)

And at the end of it, you'll walk a runway in something you built from nothing. In front of people. In something that is entirely, completely, yours.

That's how we support you. Fashion is the medium. Transformation is the mission.

One month out. Evening and Weekend cohorts start October 5th β€” ages 5 and up. Link in the comments. βœ‚οΈ

Dear Screen,

We know you're not going anywhere. We're not here to fight you.

But can we ask β€” what happens to a kid who learns to make something with her hands? Who discovers that the feeling of finishing a garment β€” something she designed, cut, stitched, and wore on a runway β€” is better than any notification she's ever gotten?

That's not a theory. That's what we watch happen, cohort after cohort, year after year.

The child who couldn't sit still for ten minutes learns to focus for two hours. The quiet kid finds his voice when he's the one explaining his design choices to the room. The kid who said "I can't sew" walks a runway in something they made themself.

One month until Columbus Fashion Academy opens new programs at Dear Garment House at 1217 Grandview Avenue. Afterschool, evening and weekend cohorts start October 5th. Ages 5 and up. Boutique size groups. Don't miss it. Link in the comments. πŸ–€

Dear Parent, Grandparent, Caregiver

One month from today, there will be a child in Columbus sitting at a sewing machine for the first time.

She won't know yet that she's building focus. She won't know she's practicing patience and kindness. She won't know the word for what's happening in her brain when she holds a design in her head, picks up a needle, and makes the thing she imagined β€” real.

She'll just know she made something.

One month from today, Columbus Fashion Academy programs start rolling at Dear Garment House at 1217 Grandview Avenue. A real studio. Real machines. Real materials. Real kids, ages 5 and up, doing real things with their hands.

If your child could benefit from this creative intentional learning experience, dont delay. Our groups are small on purpose.

Afterschool cohorts begin October 5th. Enrollment is open now β€” link in the comments. 🧡

Meet Eagle. πŸ¦… She's a brass-headed cane I fell in love with during a photoshoot years ago and I saved her because some things are too remarkable to walk away from. This week, she walks me back into the world.

I am not great at rest. These past weeks in bed have been necessary, humbling, and hard. My body (and family) said not yet. I'm listening.
But while I was resting, something more special was happening.

You know when you build something with your whole heart, and then you have to step back and trust it to others? I stepped back. And they didn't blink. Not once.

Our entire team, staff and board showed up in ways I couldn't have scripted. They run the classes and meetings. They cared for the children and their families. They represented us at events on my behalf. They didnt waited to be asked to continue moving forward. They just did.

They showed up for the kids, for the mission, for each other! All while I was resting. They held the fort with the kind of quiet excellence that doesn't ask for applause.

I am thankful. I am honored. And I cannot wait to see them this week. I can not wait to walk through our studio door. Eagle in hand. Back to my people (even if for just a few hours to start). πŸ–€

She wasn't the birthday girl. She was a guest. And she still got to decide what she made. πŸΎβœ‚οΈ

At a Columbus Fashion Academy birthday party, every guest gets to choose their own project. This 8-year-old knew exactly what she wanted: a cozy double-faced blanket for her dog.

No kit. No template. Her idea, her cuts, her sewing, her finish.

πŸŽ‚ This is what a CFA birthday party looks like.

The birthday kid picks the vibe, the music. Every guest decides what they want to make. Our instructor guides everyone through β€” in a real studio, with real materials β€” and every single child walks out with something they actually created.

No plastic goodie bags. No plastic toys. Just kids making things they're proud of.
