Original hand colored 1872 antique map of Canada's Maritime Provinces, printed more than 150 years ago.

It was published by Samuel Augustus Mitchell, Jr., Philadelphia, in 1872 and is dated in the lower margin.

The map has a decorative grapevine border, and the image area measures 34 x 27.5 cm [13½ in. x 10¾ in.], with generous margins on all sides.

Its full title is "County Map of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Cape Breton Island, and Prince Edward's Island."

There is a mileage scale at the lower left, and longitude is measured from Greenwich and Washington.

The coverage area extends from Cape Sable, Nova Scotia, to the Hudson's Bay Company Trading Post west of Cape Whittle, Saguenay County, Quebec.

The map locates numerous cities, towns and natural features, with many place names. It shows completed and proposed railroads, and shoreline details include numerous bays, coves, points, harbors, and islands.

Among the named places and features are Anticosti Island, Fredericton, Sydney, Charlottetown, St. Lawrence River, Magdalen Islands, Louisbourg, Northumberland Strait, Chatham, Hopewell, Antigonish, and the Bay of Fundy.

An inset at the lower right gives a closer look at the city and harbor of Halifax.

Dashed lines show horse-drawn streetcar lines in the city, with service along LaGrange Street between the Ottawa River and the Maumee, as well as along Washington, Monroe, Woodruff, and other streets.

The map also labels stream railroads, including the Wabash, the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern, and the Flint & Pere Marquette.

It locates coal docks, three railroad bridges, and one wagon bridge on the Maumee River.

Other named place and features include Corbutt Island, Wood Lawn Cemetery, Infirmary Road, Duck Creek, Woodville Street, Ottawa River, Wabash Car Works, and Forest Cemetery.

Handsome, large-format fold-out 1869 Colton map in original hand color: "Mexico and the United States and their Mutual Relations."

The image area measures a generous 42.7 x 62.6 cm [16¾" x 24¾"], and the map has four distance scales, calibrated in English & Italian Geological Miles; English Statute Miles; French Leagues; and Spanish Miles.

The coverage area encompasses part of the southern United States, including most of Texas, plus Belize, Guatemala, and the Republic of Mexico, with states individually colored.

Distinctively labeled is a proposed railroad between the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean, through the state of Tehuantepec. Various factors delayed the construction, and it was not until 1894 that a railroad line was built across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.

Other labeled railroads include the Rio Grande & Gulf of Mexico and the International Pacific. Topography is drawn in relief, with elevations in English feet.

Condition: This map is in very good condition, bright and clean, with a few minor fold breaks, repaired on the verso with archival tissue. Be sure to take a look at the scans and feel free to ask any questions.

Handsome antique lithographed Civil War-era map of Florida in original hand color with decorative scrollwork border, printed more than 160 years ago.

Florida's county landscape has changed significantly since this map was printed. It labels 37 counties, while today's total is 67. Some counties were re-branded, such as New River County on this map, which became Bradford County. Many of the larger counties have been subdivided. A few examples include Brevard County, extending south to the Hillsboro Inlet; Manatee County, stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to Lake Okeechobee; and Dade County (today's Miami-Dade), reaching from Cape Sable to Lake Okeechobee.

The map was drawn shortly after the Third Seminole War and has good detail on the network of military trails and roads that link dozens of forts.

Among the named forts are Pierce, McRae, Jupiter, Davenport, Arbuckle, Brooke, Hamer, Keas, Crawford, Myers, Denaud, Lauderdale, Shackleford, Center, Lloyd, Van Swearengen, and Kissimmee. Some of the fort names continue into the present day as the names of cities.

Other details include counties, cities, rivers, lakes, inlets, railroads, and natural features, including individual islands in the Everglades.

There is an inset plan of the Florida Keys. Longitude is measured from Washington and Greenwich.

The image area measures 30.5 x 38.6 cm [12" x 15¼"], and the map is titled "Johnson's Florida."

The Johnson firm was one of America's most esteemed map makers in the mid-19th century. Johnson maps are noted for their fine detail and attractive appearance, and this original Florida map is an excellent example of their fine craftsmanship...

Original hand colored 1773 edition of "Africa, Drawn and Engraved from the Best Maps and Charts," by Thomas Kitchin.

Each African kingdom and tribe thought to exist at the time is labeled, with boundaries delineated in color.

The Jages, located in central Africa, are defined as Anthropophages or Men Eaters. The Khoi, in South Africa, are labeled Hottentots, considered a derogatory term today. Among the other named tribes and kingdoms are Loango, Monomotapa, Jinjiro, Magadoxa, Benguela, and Mandingas.

There's a Dutch fort situated at the Cape of Good Hope, and the map also indicates the Grain Coast, Ivory Coast, Gold Coast, and Slave Coast sequentially along the northern shore of the Ethiopian Sea, an area more familiarly known today as the Gulf of Guinea.

Among other labeled places and features are Negroland, Zaire River, Fort Christiansburg on the Slave Coast, the headwaters of the Nile, numerous islands in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar, Strait of Gibraltar, Cairo, and the Red Sea.

The map was published in "A New System of Geography: or, A General Description of the World," by Daniel Fenning and Joseph Collyer, London; 1773.

It has a decorative title cartouche and a distance scale calibrated in British statute miles.

The image area measures 34 x 37.4 cm [13½" x 14¾"], and longitude is measured east of London.

Condition: The map is in very good condition, bright and clean, with two vertical folds, as issued, and no marks, rips, or tears. It is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side.

Handsome original hand colored antique 1850 map of Maine, published less than a decade after the state's northern border had been defined.

It labels the original boundary line of lands claimed by Great Britain; the boundary according to the Treaty of 1783, following the Revolutionary War; and the line proposed by William I, King of the Netherlands, who'd been appointed by Great Britain and the United States to settle the dispute, which basically became the line established by the Webster-Ashburton Treaty in 1842 to define the border between the United States and British North America (now Canada). The Metjarmette Portage, a boundary marker in the treaty is among the named features on the map.

Counties are individually hand colored and labeled, and other details include towns, county seats, and natural features, with topography drawn in relief.

Numerous wagon roads are located on the map, with distances noted from town to town along the various routes.

A table at the upper right gives county populations form the 1830 and 1840 censuses, along with year-by-year state populations and population totals for county towns.

The image area measures 38.2 x 30.5 cm [15" x 12"], and longitude is measured from Washington. There's a distance scale inside the lower margin and the map has an attractive ribbon border.

The map was created by Samuel Augustus Mitchell and published in Philadelphia by Thomas, Cowperthwait & Company. It is titled "A New Map of Maine," with the "New" in the title a reference to the recently settled boundary dispute.

Stunning, wall-size map of South America in original hand color, published in Henry Schenck Tanner's "New American Atlas" more than 195 years ago.

The image area measures a generous 91.5 x 53.2 cm [36" x 21"]. The overall size including margins is 102 x 60.5 cm [40¼" x 23¾"].

The map depicts the continent of South America from Panama to Tierra del Fuego and from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean, including the Florida Keys and the West Indies from Cuba and the Bahamas to Trinidad and Tobago, as well as the Falkland Islands and South Georgia.

An inset with diagram and table gives the comparative altitudes of various mountains and towns.

There are four distance scales, longitude is measured from Greenwich and Washington, and the map is titled "South America with Improvements to 1825."

It was a time of great political upheaval on the continent, when former Spanish and Portuguese colonies fought for and attained their independence.

The Cisplatine War, also known as the Argentine-Brazilian War, started the year this map was printed, resulting in the independence of Cisplatina as the Oriental Republic of Uruguay.

Text in the lower margin reads "Engraved & Published by H.S. Tanner, Philadelphia. Entered according to Act of Congress, the 8th day of June 1818, by Tanner, Vallance, Kearny & Co. of the State of Pennsylvania."

The northern and southern portions were issued as two separate fold-out pages in Tanner's atlas and have been joined at the center, on the reverse side, with archival tape. Each page also has a horizontal fold, reinforced on the reverse side with archival tale.

Tanner's 1825 "A New American Atlas" was "one the most magnificent atlases ever published in the United States," engraved during the "Golden Age of American Cartography" (Ristow).

Original antique lithographed map detailing the grants along both sides of Lake Champlain, with landowner's names.

It extends south to show part of Lake George, and it locates the Seigniory of Alainville and the Seigniory of Hocquart.

Other named places and features include Crown Point, Otter Creek, Grande Isle, Missisquoi River, and a block of land in the present-day town of Addison, Vermont, granted by the Mohawks to Godfrey Dellius, the Dutch minister at Albany.

The names of many other grantees are also labeled on the map, with boundaries originally marked in yellow, black, and red lines, although the colors have faded away with the passage of time.

This authentic mid-19th century map was lithographed by Richard H. Pease and published in Volume Two of "The Documentary History of the State of New York," Edmund Bailey O'Callaghan, Albany, New York, 1849. Overall measurements are 59 x 31.5 cm [23¼" x 12¼"]

Condition: It had been issued in folded format but has been stored flat for many years. It is in very good condition, with a few faint spots and some minor creasing. There are tiny breaks and light toning on a couple of folds. It is printed on a lightweight paper and is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side.

This map would make a very handsome display, and we'll include our helpful framing tips for your reference, along with a photocopy of the dated title page from the book in which it was published more than 170 years ago.
