Hecho en Carolina is a little experiment that came from a lot of big ideas. In the early onslaught of Covid-19, we were watching the confusion created by a narrative that glorified "essential workers" while working conditions became significantly worse for many people, and many others lost income altogether--to say nothing of the invisible, unpaid labor that many of us were already performing through caretaking, parenting, mutual aid, which became more strenuous and demanding.
We scrambled to form one business that could meet immediate needs for a few families while using skill sets they had, but we still understand it as a drop in a huge bucket that remains quite empty. Hecho en Carolina was able to get our start because of our collaboration with the heroes in our schools--their testing and feedback of our early designs was priceless, their initial purchase of masks we made with Cut The Music Prints & Design helped us learn how to work together to make big orders happen.
As we look forward to two holidays, May Day and Mothers' Day, whose signficance we hope has been magnified by Covid-19, we will be thanking the many essential workers who have done so much, starting with educators, and we commit to fight next to you for wins that we hope will impact workers everywhere.
