Richard Schneider brought something special to The Shoe Market every single day. He was the kind of salesperson customers remembered long after they left the store — not just because of his knowledge and dedication, but because of the way he made people feel. Richard could turn an ordinary conversation into something memorable, usually with a witty story, a perfectly timed one-liner, or an observation so uniquely “Richard” that you’d find yourself laughing about it hours later. He had a sense of humor that was equal parts clever, dry, unexpected, and entirely his own.
Behind that humor was a tremendous love for life and for the people closest to him. His devotion to his wife Gail, daughter Ali, and beloved dog Cotton came through in countless conversations and stories over the years. You could hear the pride in his voice whenever he spoke about them. And then there was Winnie, the stray cat Gail brought home — a development Richard narrated with ongoing dramatic resistance. According to Richard, he and Cotton had to “stick together as the men of the house.” But despite all the joking complaints, it was obvious Winnie had won him over too. Richard had a soft spot for animals and often reminded us that they were simply too good for people anyway.
Richard approached life with energy, heart, and authenticity. Whether he was helping a customer find the perfect fit, making coworkers laugh during a busy day, or sharing stories about his family, he brought genuine passion and personality into everything he did. He had a rare ability to make people feel comfortable, welcomed, and entertained all at once. His presence made The Shoe Market brighter, warmer, and far more interesting.
We will deeply miss Richard’s stories, his humor, his kindness, and the unmistakable spark he brought to all that he did. But most of all, we will miss the joy of simply getting to know him. There will never be another quite like Richard.
Our hearts are with Gail, Ali, Cotton, and all who loved him.
