Aunt Aimee’s Custom Closet

Aunt Aimee’s Custom Closet Custom design and alterations services. Create one of a kind pieces, transform old garments, and achieve a custom fit.

I am able to provide full service alterations for formal events as well as casual pieces Aunt Aimee’s Custom Closet was created for the love of sewing.... crafting and creating has been the story of my life. As a young girl, I was grounded from the sewing machine for working without a pattern, but soon I was left to sew freely and create any multitude of projects. After spending years creating one

of a kind pieces for my children and family members, I developed my seamstress skills as an alterations specialist for a local bridal company. While I love helping people create a custom fit, I also wanted to expand my capabilities to help customers create truly custom pieces. Customization services are also available for keepsake projects.

Aren’t these the cutest?! I’ve been thinking about custom apparel labels for a while now and finally ordered a small batch to start. With all the custom projects, keepsakes and conversions I do, I wanted to make sure my brand is represented.

As I move forward into entrepreneurship, I’m realizing the need to be more fearless in putting myself out there. One more reason I’m partnering with the campaign. Make sure to use the link in my bio to donate to my NYC marathon race and score yourself a discount for any service I provide through the studio.

We’ve got another multi generational wedding dress making an appearance coming in June…. This project is going to prioritize restoration over reconstruction as the bride wants to honor the dress as closely as possible to the original style. This brocade beauty wasn’t stored in any special way so it has decades of environmental stress to undue.
We needed to reclaim hidden length at the hem so the first steps include stain removal and careful hand washing. For most stains, Shout works amazing…. Just be sure to back your fabric layer with a clean towel, spray area with water and then use stain remover with a clean towel to rub out the stain. I use specialized stain removers for ink, blood and food stains ( if you’re in a pinch- dawn dish soap works great too).
I love this oversized utility sink we put in with our laundry room remodel- it works great for hand washing dresses. I use a combination of quilt soap and OxyClean in warm water. Aggitate by hand, let soak for about 20 minutes, do a rinse bath, and then hand wring, and dry flat between towels.
Stay tuned for future sneak peeks at the ways we are getting this dress ready for a big reveal and walk down the aisle!

Ahhh, the peace and quiet of “wedding off season” doesn’t mean the studio isn’t a buzz with other projects. I’ve used my down time to generate a few special projects-
a custom embroidered Christmas tree skirt from a wedding dress ( sorry no picture available), but it took several days and over 250,000 stitches. The embroidery machine has proven itself a great addition to my studio offerings and I love the Ink Stitch computer program which allows me to create my own embroidery files for free if needed.

I ventured into the realm of resin floral preservation, and let me tell you that it is Hard! The whole process of drying the flowers, deciding on the right size mold, designing the layout and pouring the resin in stages took about two months. I have a lot to learn about babysitting the resin as it sets and getting rid of the bubbles with fresh pours. It turned out great and my daughter loves it so thats all I can ask for. Definitely not ready to offer this to the public but I’ve got mad respect for anyone who does. The process requires a masters level of patience.

I also used up some of the comfy yarn I purchased from Joann’s closing sales to crochet a few afghans. (I always have to feel the softness of the yarn before I buy it). I love to feel the weight of any blanket so I tend to use two strands of yarn when crocheting to make a thicker blanket. The tangerine multi color and the yellow/brown ombre are smaller baby/children’s sized blankets (40”x44” or so) and the deep color stripe blanket is a longer full body size blanket. Interested in combatting the cold with a soft cuddle? These would love a couch of their own. Message me.

Another quick weekend “fashion fixer upper” before I head out to the beach for a little R&R. This super cute romper had a high waist (again!), so I opened up the sash and added it between the bodice and bottoms for an integrated waist band. Added back elastic to both sides of the addition, and use the rest of the sash to create a built in belt tie. Love it and now I don’t feel like my bo**ie cheeks are exposed.

It’s not very often that I get asked to take things away from a wedding dress…. This dress was love at first sight (almost). The soft buttery fabric and stunning appliqués won over the crowd but the extensive beadwork and sequin texture created undue sensory issues. I went to work trimming every single bead away from the dress but we kept the sequins and cut down the armpit instead to allow the dress to reflect light and create a look as stunning as this bride’s smile. We had to get a little creative with bodice structure so the dress felt like a second skin the whole day.
I don’t often get “day of” pictures of the brides that come to me so being able to celebrate with this amazing bride was a true honor. I could tell we got the dress perfectly fitted for her dream wedding day.

Another bridal gown recreation just hit the runway this past weekend… I am beyond privileged that April asked me to help her daughter create a bridal shower stunner with April’s own wedding dress. The dress fit Maddie perfectly to begin with and we decided a knee length skirt would look the best with the height of the lace appliqués. Dress conversions like this take time and attention to detail but the results are always worth it.
April also asked for a bouquet wrap for the big day which should coordinate with Maddie’s dress nicely.

It has been the craziest fall season in a while! Over 30 dresses have come and gone since the beginning of September. I have been sewing like a mad woman and am finally down to the last dresses in the closet (for my daughters wedding this weekend). And even though I’ve been busy with clients, when I have some free time I am most likely still doing a little sewing for myself.
I picked up this jumpsuit earlier this year but regretted it. I love the idea of looking cool in a jumpsuit but the waist is always too too high and the crotch cuts weird. Lucky for me “where there’s a seam, there’s a way!” I took it apart at the waist, finished the bottom edge of the bodice with another strip of elastic to convert it to a crop top. Then added an elastic waistband to make a super comfy pair of lounge pants.
With two beach vacations on the horizon, I’ll be putting this outfit in my carry on right away.

Another customized wedding dress making dreams come true this weekend. This dress up-do required a total disassembly. I added a second lining layer and pockets the underskirt. This bride was all about sparkle with crystals taking center stage, so I added appliques and crystal and rhinestone beadwork by hand to the bodice and cathedral length veil. Then I added silver glitter to the middle layers of tulle to increase the sparkle factor by 1000(see video in comments). The back of the bodice was angled for comfort and a commemorative piece was added to the pocket. Was it a lot? Yes. Was it worth it? Absolutely! I would do it all again in a heartbeat if that’s what makes this moment unforgettable. Even better is that this young lady is now the newest member of our family as she and our son said their “forever I do’s.”
