The Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio, is one of America’s most iconic and chilling historical prisons. Built in the late 1800s, it was originally designed to reform young offenders — but what happened inside these massive stone walls was far darker.

From brutal punishments, overcrowding, and infamous escapes to ghost sightings and paranormal activity, the Reformatory carries a history filled with tragedy and mystery. It later gained worldwide fame as the filming location for “The Shawshank Redemption.”
