👁️ Myth Buster: Cataracts Only Affect the Elderly

Fact: While cataracts are more common as we age, they can affect adults of all ages and, in some cases, even children. Factors such as genetics, diabetes, eye injuries, certain medications, and prolonged UV exposure can increase the risk of developing cataracts earlier in life.

That's why regular comprehensive eye exams are important, no matter your age. Early detection can help protect your vision and keep your eyes healthy for years to come.

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is one of the most common vision conditions affecting both children and adults. Individuals with myopia can typically see nearby objects clearly, while objects in the distance appear blurry.

Early detection is important, particularly for children, as vision plays a critical role in learning, development, and everyday activities.

👁️ Comprehensive eye exams help identify myopia and monitor changes over time, allowing for personalized care and vision solutions that meet each patient's needs. Ask your optometrist about the new FDA-approved Stellest lenses for myopia management.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Julianna Dimitri to Voss Vision 🎉

Dr. Julianna Dimitri comes from a family of eye doctors in New Orleans, Louisiana, which inspired her lifelong passion for optometry. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, graduating cm laude, before completing her Doctor of Optometry degree at Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, also with cm laude honors.

Her clinical training includes extensive experience in ocular disease management, ocular surface disease, cataract and refractive surgery co-management, and specialty contact lens fitting. Before becoming an optometrist, she spent nearly a decade working in eye care as a front desk associate, technician, and optician — giving her a unique, well-rounded perspective on patient care.

Outside the office, Dr. Dimitri enjoys traveling, trying new restaurants, and staying active. She recently relocated to Greenville with her fiancé and is excited to put down roots in the community. At Voss Vision, she looks forward to bringing her passion for optometry, strong clinical training, and personalized approach to patient care, while building lasting relationships with her patients.

Please give her a warm welcome, and book your appointment with Dr. Dimitri today! 💚👓

Friday Fun Fact! 🦈👁️

The cornea is one of the most important parts of your eye. It's the clear, protective front layer that helps focus light so you can see clearly.

Interestingly, shark corneas are structurally so similar to ours that researchers have studied them as a potential resource for corneal transplants and eye surgery. 👀

Ever noticed a raised, fleshy growth on the white of the eye? That could be a pterygium - a benign (noncancerous) growth that can extend onto the cornea and, over time, affect vision if left unchecked.

Common causes include:
☀️ Prolonged UV exposure
💨 Wind and dust
🏜️ Dry environments

Mild cases may just need monitoring, but if it starts affecting your vision or comfort, treatment options are available. If you've noticed changes in your eyes, don't wait - schedule an exam with your eye doctor.

Contacts give you freedom - to run errands around Greenville, catch a workout, or head into a big meeting without giving your glasses a second thought. But that freedom comes with responsibility. Healthy habits are what keep your eyes comfortable, clear, and infection-free for years to come.

This week, we're reminding our Greenville community of a few simple but essential rules:
✅ Wash and dry your hands thoroughly before touching your lenses
✅ Never sleep in daily-wear contacts
✅ Replace lenses and lens cases on schedule - even if they "still feel fine"
✅ Keep water away from your contacts (no swimming, showering, or rinsing with tap water)
✅ Don't skip your annual eye exam, even if your vision feels unchanged

It's easy to treat contacts as routine, but your eyes deserve the same care and attention you'd give any part of your health.

If it's been a while since your last check-up, there's no better time than Contact Lens Health Week to schedule one. Our team is here to help you see - and feel - your best.
