π•²π–—π–Šπ–Šπ–™π–Žπ–“π–Œπ–˜ from lower Appalachia, from a long silence here.

The morning Hurricane Helene ripped through our holler, I took these photos. The light here is by candles we lit after we lost power. Even inside our house the air was tense, electric with the presence of the storm. All we could do was be and wait. So I drank my last cup of tea made in my electric kettle, not knowing it would be another week before such comforts returned. I read Thomas Moore aloud to my family between glances out the window at the creek through our property becoming a river, no knowing where it would stop. And I took these pictures.

The quartz crystal ball was from a estate sale I had visited just a week before. The deceased was - as described by her friend whom I met there - a β€œwhite witch”, a retro term. I wondered if she used the sphere for divination, or had it as a beautiful natural object.

This app once helped me piece myself together out of a deep depression. This was in its early days, nearly 15 years ago now. It wasn’t the app. It was the people. There is something of the old spirit of Instagram in these photos, when it felt like a place real people came to share interests and creative expression.

I share them here as a spell, to bring back a bit of that old spirit. Perhaps as we put pieces back together in this region, in our lives wherever we are, we can remember the parts of each other that do the connecting and the healing and the communing, in whatever form it takes.

Sometimes estate sale photos suck and sometimes they are a whole mood. That’s when you know you got a good one and you gotta get down there. Commune with this deceased collector-mage. Lay hands and feel the energy. Source the rare and unusual.

Today I visited a historic Naval hospital for my Other Job. The hospital’s first building was built in 1827, and it still retains many of its historic features. I didn’t meet any ghosts, but I did lie on this antique operating table like a weirdo and make one of my colleagues take a photo. Don’t worry for my job, they’ve met me before.

Jokes aside, it was an honor to tour these facilities where members of my country’s service men and women live and work. In the historic parts alone, there is such an energetic memory of all the pain, healing, and death.

We had such a wonderful time at the in Charlotte this past weekend! If you came by our booth, know that we are incredibly grateful for the chance to meet you and share these treasures with you. And it was lovely to connect with some other vendors we admire as well. Now we get to collect more special things for the next one, and I am hoping to offer some of the collection in my online space as well. πŸ–€

Blonkindosh Club. My sister and me, 1995, as the eldest I was President. She was VP. Summer afternoons stretched like cats, everlasting and deep, and we stalked around the neighborhood pretending to be spies. Imagined lives behind walls and doors were our mysteries, made-up crimes we knit together with empty rooms seen through windows, the fragrant mud between our feet, the shifting light through clouds.

A spiral notebook labeled EVIDENCE. Back on the porch, the feel of warm concrete through my shorts. The cache of freeze pops inside in the kitchen, in the freezer. Safe arms of our bunk beds at the end of this day.

Secret societies like the Freemasons with their symbols and childlike β€œkeep out” mystique have always been interesting to me. Something about belonging and not belonging, about arcane knowledge that is maybe just shared ci**rs and watching football games in the lodge. Or maybe the highest grandmaster is a sasquatch. The point being it’s fun to imagine what the f**k goes on, went on, with these groups.

And yeah, I’m still the President of the Blonkindosh Club.

The Yuletide season was high spooky story time, historically. I think of this when, arriving home at 6:30pm after picking up my daughter at the end of a workday, it feels closer to midnight than daylight.

Ghostly tales around a lit hearth surrounded by candlelight and loved ones goes back longer than is traceable since it began as oral tradition. By the the late 1800s in Victorian England, the Christmas ghost story saw it’s height of popularity with the invention of the steam-powered printing press. In good old Industrial Revolution fashion, Victorian printers commodified the Christmas storytelling tradition in the pages of periodicals.

I think of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, naturally. But that wasn’t his only foray into spooky Xmas tales. He wrote many Christmas novellas featuring ghosts, worked with other authors’ Christmas ghost stories for publication in magazines he edited.

The darkest time of year, the season of Winter Solstice, the Longest Night, feels like a natural environment for ghost stories. People have little reprieve from the darkness and so it is harder to look away, finally from what moves in the shadows.

Let’s bring back the Christmas ghost story tradition. Who’s in? πŸŽ„πŸ‘»

Two finds of the weekend ~
Egyptian queen bookend and antique incense tin. The tin is circa 1940s, and I don’t know why I never thought about people just burning incense in their house that long ago. I think it’s a cool little find.
