Eatonton, Georgia is the hometown of Joel Chandler Harris, author of the Uncle Remus stories (Br'er Rabbit, Uncle Remus, Br'er Fox, Br'er Bear)
Also hometown to Olympic Track Coach Jimmy Carnes
(Jimmy co-founded Athletic Attic with Marty Liquori….America’s first running store chain)….
Eatonton is also the hometown of Truett Cathy…founder of Chick-fil-A…

Greenville Running Company Team Captain Karen Becker raced very well at the Sunrise Run 8k (5-Mile) this last weekend….

Running almost a minute faster than she did last year…averaging 6:49/Mile….
As she gets older, she gets faster….
She was the first woman to finish that has crossed the 1/2 Century mark…
***Karen has a storied history in running ….starting in 1990…she was her High School Cross-Country MVP in Fort Myers, Florida….came to Greenville to run for Furman University and pursue B.S. & M.S. degrees in Biology and Exercise Science….Won the Overall Title in the Running Journal Southeast U.S. Roadracing Grand Prix…..Coached Riverside High School Girls Cross-Country to multiple State Championships,
Has taught A.P. Biology for 29 years and has helped runners find the right shoe at the store for nearly a 1/4 Century….
(and is quite adept at modifying shoes)……
During the school year, she is at the store on weekends but during the summer, she is here everyday………..

Today, June 14th is Flag Day ……..
This particular flag is quite special to me as it was flown over Camp Arifjan in my honor…..
Flag Day was a really Big Deal in my youth…. We were just one generation removed from the Americans that unselfishly saved the world from the “Axis of Evil”…… “The Greatest Generation”-our parents, relatives, teachers, mentors, employers…..
Among many tasks of my youth, my friends and I worked in the cemetery….mowing grass, picking weeds, cleaning around the tombstones and general duties…
When Memorial Day & Veterans Day came; the flags on the Veterans’ graves were replaced with new ones….
We would take the best of the old ones and put them up in our treehouses and camps in the woods…..We were so proud to be Americans…
When I first raced in Europe, I could trade a “USA Run For Fun” shirt for almost anything…

“When Running Was Young and So Was I”
This photo was taken a half Century ago today…It’s my birthday!
The shirt came from the Melbourne, Florida Marathon which was the previous December …. I was a high school junior….
The book “Once A Runner” was published in 1978 and is most-likely the most-read running book in history…it details incredibly well the journey it takes to chase being the best & an Olympic Medal”……………….

At Melbourne, I met up & shared a motel room with my brother Dave and his Florida Track Club (FTC) Teammates Bruce Carpenter & Mike Caldwell (they drove down from Gainesville…. I rode over from Port Charlotte) …..
Bruce is the runner on the cover of
“Once A Runner”…..the photo was taken in Bruce and Dave’s Gainesville home by its author John Parker who was their friend & Florida Track Club (FTC) teammate…
Bruce won the Marathon that weekend while Dave, Mike, and I raced the 1/2 Marathon…
Their Florida Track Club (FTC) teammate Frank Shorter, who won the 1972 Olympic Marathon is credited with igniting the “Running Boom”……
***A year after this photo, I packed my suitcase; took a bus to Chicagoland for College……and ran for a young coach who, decades later, would be named “Coach of the Century” by the United States Track & Cross-Country Coaches Association.
