On this day in 1587, the 117 English colonists who would become the "Lost Colony" landed on Roanoke Island. Having survived seventy days at sea, the colonists stopped at Roanoke to pick up supplies and the fifteen soldiers who had been left behind. The soldiers had been left on the island to protect English interests in the New World. When the colonists arrived, the soldiers were nowhere to be found. The colonists had planned to settle further north in the Chesapeake Bay, but the ships refused to take them any further. They were now stranded on Roanoke Island with no way back to England and an uncertain future ahead of them.
