Ellen Breunig Quilting

Ellen Breunig Quilting Hi and Welcome! After 10+ years, I no longer offer single design, edge to edge quilting. Hi - thanks for visiting! Why call my business New Day Quilting?

If need custom quilting, memorial quilting, repair or renewal of a fabric family treasure, or if you are interested in an art quilt for a special space, let's talk! Be sure to click the photos tab and check out photos of completed projects. I love to post pics of the "fancy" projects, but I do plenty of "bread and butter" edge to edge quilting as well. I have more information about my services on

my website. Because I know we all have projects floating around in the back of our closets and in the back of our heads, just waiting to be picked up again and finished. Well I say, its a New Day; let's work together and get it finished so it can stop gathering dust and it can be a blessing to you or someone you love. Maybe you have never done much sewing or quilting because you did not know where to start, or maybe you had a bad or frustrating experience in the past? Well, it's a New Day, let's get together and get you started again on this exciting hobby. It's so fun to make something special for all those special people in your life. Fiber Designs, what does that mean? Hmmm, good question. I just didn't want to limit my business to quilting only; do you want to make a special or sentimental gift? Did someone leave you a box of Great Grandma's unfinished quilt blocks? Let's talk and come up with some great ideas. I can sew just about anything (no tailoring, and not crazy about window treatments).

This beauty went home today. Pieces from 60+ dance costumes, from a young woman who danced from age 3 to 18, and who danced competitively since third grade. Although I tried photographing it under different lighting conditions, sadly I wasn't able to capture the true sparkle and shine of the piece. Spandex, sequins and rhinestones were abundant! It was quite a challenge, and my customer (mom) was happy that I was able to capture her vision for the project. As she looked at it, she could fondly remember all the different dances. A true memory quilt! 62.5"x62.5"

A little Friday quilty fun. A big beautiful quilt going home soon to one of my favorite customers.

And an announcement:
After almost 12 years of longarm quilting, I've decided it's time to move on to other (as yet unnamed) adventures. And it's time to work on a few of my own projects! It's been a pleasure quilting for so many of you, and having the privilege of collaborating with you on your beautiful projects. I am no longer accepting tops to quilt from new customers. If I have quilted for you previously, I will accept new projects until October 1st. For anyone: If you are interested in having a t-shirt or memorial quilt made I will accept orders until September 1st.

I have seen lots of changes in the quilting industry in the last 12 years. Shops, shows, and styles have all come and gone. Computer guided quilting has become more popular than ever, making it more difficult for us hand guided quilters to stay competitive (but no, that's not why I'm moving on.)

What hasn't changed is the love, beauty, and creativity I've seen come through my door in the shape of quilt tops. Because as every quilt maker knows, it's not about the fabrics, the colors, the patterns. It's about the love of the craft, and the love we spread to others, in the shape of a quilt. Because the world can always use more love and beauty. Keep creating, friends, and many thanks!

3 Christmas projects that I can share, since they've now been given.

My customer's mother-in-law had left multiple festive sweatshirts with cross stitched designs. There were more than 30 of them-she was a busy lady! My customer wanted small memory quilts for each of her adult children. Based on the big smiles, they will appreciate these quilts and the memories of their precious grandma!

I'm happy to share this memory quilt with you. A customer brought me 4 of her late father's shirts, and wanted a quilt to memorialize her dad and his love for fishing and the outdoors. I created a custom design, including "fish" blocks utilizing fabric from the shirts. There was enough fabric to also create a fun, pieced back. Now, she can snuggle with her new quilt, warmed by fond memories.

A quilt and a story.. (it's kind of a long story)

This treasured family heirloom was originally made in the 1940s using muslin and feedsack fabrics, sewn on a treadle machine. The quilt had sustained some serious damage, and my friend's family asked me what I could do.

First of all I let them know that "fixing" a vintage quilt reduces the monetary and historical value of a quilt. All that mattered to them was preserving the sentimental value of the quilt, and making sure future generations could enjoy grandma's handiwork.

So , I got to work. 32 new patches either replaced or covered up damaged patches-all by hand. Other patches were mended.. Multiple areas in the white muslin were reinforced and mended. The original cotton batting was disintegrating, so it was removed from most, but not all areas. New batting and a new backing was put below the original backing . Then, the whole shebang was machine quilted, and new binding was attached.

And....tada, a new old quilt, much stronger and more stable and ready for future generations to enjoy.

I'll post some "before" pictures in the comments

Another happy t-shirt quilt recipient-love that smile! A dark, multicolored fabric was chosen for both the backing and the border. It adds a lot of fun and spark. Let me know if you are ready to turn your pile of t-shirts into a quilt!
