It breathes through its butt. It can stay underwater for more than two and a half days. And algae grows on its head and shell.
But the strangest part might be that scientists didn't even know where these animals came from for more than 20 years.
From its unusual breathing system and mysterious history to the pet trade, juvenile survival, and the people working to protect it.

Some animals are impossible to miss once you actually know they're there.

The magnificent flower beetle is one of them. Its name is pretty fitting, because look at this thing!

But that's kind of the point behind this series.

There are thousands of incredible animals out there that most of us will never notice, not because they're unimportant, but because we simply don't know they exist.

And I think that's worth changing.

Because it's a lot easier to care about wildlife once you know who you're looking at.
