Santa Fe Springs Conditions Update – Poe Springs

A noticeable change has occurred at Poe Springs over the past couple of weeks: Poe has essentially stopped flowing, while several springs farther downstream along the Santa Fe are still discharging.

So how can one spring stop while nearby springs continue to flow?

Although these springs are all connected to the regional Floridan Aquifer, they don’t necessarily share one simple underground “tunnel.” The limestone beneath the Santa Fe contains a complex network of fractures, caves, and groundwater conduits, and individual springs can have different springsheds, conduit systems, vent elevations, and hydraulic conditions.

With the current drought and unusually low groundwater levels, the aquifer may no longer have enough hydraulic head to push water out through Poe’s particular spring system. Other springs downstream can still flow if their conduits are deeper, larger, or connected to areas where groundwater pressure remains high enough to maintain discharge.

Think of several outlets coming from the same large water tank at different heights. As the water level drops, the highest outlet can stop flowing while the lower outlets continue.

That appears to be what we may be seeing along the Santa Fe right now.

Current observations:
• Poe Springs – little to no spring discharge
• Springs farther downstream – many are still flowing
• Santa Fe River and regional groundwater levels – very low due to prolonged drought conditions

This is an important reminder that neighboring springs can respond very differently to the same drought because their underground plumbing is not identical.

We’ll continue watching conditions along the Santa Fe and sharing updates as things change.

If anyone has recent flow observations, photos, or firsthand conditions from Poe, Rum Island, Gilchrist Blue, Ginnie, or other Santa Fe springs, please share them below. 👇
