Dorothea Puente (1929–2011) was a Sacramento boarding house owner who became one of America's most infamous serial killers. During the 1980s, she targeted elderly, disabled, and vulnerable tenants who relied on government assistance. After gaining their trust, she murdered several of them, buried their bodies in the yard of her Victorian boarding house, and continued cashing their Social Security and benefit checks. Her crimes were uncovered in 1988 when authorities discovered multiple bodies on the property. Puente was convicted of three murders in 1993, although investigators believe she may have been responsible for as many as nine deaths. Her case remains one of the most notorious examples of financial exploitation and serial murder in U.S. criminal history.
