Red Hill General Store

Red Hill General Store Not many authentic general stores are left-- but the thrill & experience of visiting Red Hill in Hillsville is an old fashioned delight.

We will never claim to be a perfect company, but we will address difficult issues and strive to be honest about our ability or inability to resolve them. Responsible product supply, labeling and distribution infrastructure is an ongoing social challenge. We hand-pick products with trusted standards we've learned over time. We encourage product manufacturers to reduce product impact and uphold qual

ity and affordability. While we want you to always choose to purchase from us because you love our products, we want you to feel good about where it's from. Our customer service, shipping department, and retail store team members earn good wages for workers in the United States; which is in sharp contrast to the 20 cents per hour wages of call centers and internet shipping business abroad. Operating retail stores responsibly in America requires risk taking and long-term investment. The industry's relentless and blind pursuit of the lowest possible wages cannot be sustained over time. Moreover, providing markets for local commodities is critical to thriving communities. There is satisfaction in being an independently owned and operated small business which uses local resources sustainably, employs workers at decent wages and meaningfully serves community citizens. Whether you live nearby or are just passing through we invite you to stop by our store in Hillsville, VA. Throughout our stores you’ll find name brands you know and love. We are authorized dealers of, WR Case knives, All American Canners, Rada knives, Presto cookers and canners, White Mountain, Jelly Belly jelly beans, and more. But even if you do not live nearby, you can still enjoy a Red Hill experience online at: http://redhillgeneralstore.com

🐐 We're proud to carry Bates Family Farm, our skin is loving it, and the story behind it is a good one!🐐

In 2013, after serving over 21 years in the Marine Corps, Joseph Bates retired, moved his family to the Appalachian Mountains of Southwest Virginia, and got himself some goats to help deal with stress. Before long, those few goats multiplied and the family had more milk than they knew what to do with. So his wife, who'd taken a lotion-making class, figured she'd give it a try. The first batch filled just three bottles. Now they're making thousands.

Goat milk is full of fatty acids close to our own skin's pH, so it absorbs easily without the irritation you get from some store-brand lotions. Gentle enough for dry, sensitive skin.

Veteran-owned, family-made, right here in Virginia. Good folks, good product, good cause.

As the old-timers say: eat the honey from your own hills, and the pollen won't trouble you so much. 🍯

There's some truth in it, too. We're currently stocked with raw honey from bees all across the county. Raised in a Barn Farm (Willis) just brought in highly anticipated Sourwood, or pick from Pot Rock (Woodlawn) and Saw Holler (Galax). So you can get about as close to your own backyard as there is. The closer those bees buzzed to home, the closer the honey is to what's making you sneeze.

Wildflower, Sourwood, honey with the comb, and little honey bears for the young'uns.

Pick your holler and taste the mountains. 🐝 Red Hill General Store.

πŸ’œ BACK IN STOCK -- Carroll County Lavender! πŸ’œ

Grown right up the road in Hillsville, and we're so glad to have it back on our shelves! Room sprays in Honeysuckle, Apple Pie, Lemon Kitchen, Peppermint Twist and more. Lavender shoe sacks to freshen boots and drawers ($7.49). Bug Armor natural insect spray. And beautiful dried lavender bundles straight from the field.

And lavender isn't just pretty β€” it's good for you and good for the earth! It calms nerves and helps you rest easy, naturally freshens without harsh chemicals, and out in the field it feeds the honeybees and pollinators we all depend on. A little plant that does a whole lot of good. 🐝

πŸͺ΄ From Babylon to the Blue Ridge! πŸͺ΄

Folks have been hanging baskets since the days of the ancient Romans. Even the famous Hanging Gardens of Babylon were just fancy hanging baskets if you think about it! Here in the mountains, a porch full of ferns and flowers has always been a sign of a well-loved home (and a fine place to sit a spell).

Summer's winding down, so give that droopy plant a dignified retirement and hang up a big beautiful mum! We've got the brackets and hooks to hold 'em up - sturdy wrought iron plant hooks that'll last for years, cute squirrels, birds, and bunnies, plus sturdy planter brackets, S-hooks, and extension hooks.

Keep the tradition going. πŸ‚ Red Hill General Store.

πŸ”₯ Nothing Beats Cast Iron 🍳

There's a reason cast iron has been in mountain kitchens for generations. Around here, iron runs deep. Some of the very ore that built this country was mined right here in the hills of Carroll County. Folks have been cooking on cast iron for 2500 years, passing the same skillets down from grandma to mama to the next in line.

And there's good reason to hold onto them! Cast iron cooks up hot and even, gives you that perfect golden crust (just look at those pancakes πŸ₯ž), and doesn't have any of the funny coatings you find on the nonstick pans. Cook on it enough and it even adds a little iron to your food - good for you and good tasting. Take care of one and it'll outlast just about everything else in your kitchen.

A well-seasoned skillet only gets better with age. It's the kind of thing you buy once and hand down.

We've got Lodge skillets, griddles, pans, and more in stock now here at Red Hill General Store. Come find the one that'll be in your family for years to come. 🍳

πŸƒπŸ‘‘ Leaf Princess Crown πŸ‘‘πŸƒ

There's magic in what the mountains give us at summer's end. Here's a little leaf crown craft we did as kids that costs nothing.

It starts with a short walk outside to gather your treasures. Here in the Blue Ridge, with over 50 species of Virginia forest trees, your leaf choices for texture are many! We love oak and maple, but every leaf brings its own shape and charm. You'll need about 10 leaves for a crown.

Summer's wildflowers will fade soon, but keep your eyes open β€” you can still find black-eyed Susans, Queen Anne's lace, yarrow, and daisies in bloom. 🌼

Bring your collection back to the porch and fold your leaves over small twigs, flat reed, or even pipe cleaners. Layer them up and sew them together with a yarn needle and twine. Our favorite is food-grade Cotton Twine that we keep in stock at just $3.49, and one roll really lasts! (We stock lots of other twines and strings too.)

A beautiful afternoon, a walk in the mountain air, and a crown made for free from the land itself.

🍌 BACK TO SCHOOL, Y'ALL! 🐡

You know how it goes... you pack a nice banana in the lunchbox, and by the time they open it up, it's a brown, squished mess β€” brought back home as a mushy science experiment at the bottom of the backpack. What a waste!

Well, we've got the fix. It's a Banana Saver! This little monkey case keeps your banana safe from lunchboxes, locker slams, tractor rides, and whatever else the day brings. πŸ’

And it's just $4.99! Dishwasher safe too (top rack), so cleanup's easy.

Around here we don't throw good food away β€” and we're tired of scraping banana off of everything! Pack a healthy banana to-go.

Come on in and grab one or, even, a few!
