Where exactly did these funky felt hats of the 1920’s come from? Old fedora hand me downs would be turned inside-out, the brim would be upturned and cut to create interesting patterns. Kids would further customize these creations with pins, buttons and other trinkets (including teeth. Yes, teeth!). These fun repurposed fedoras came to be known as “whoopee caps”.
Whoopee cap craze spread with the most famous whoopee cap wearer being Jughead Jones from Archie comics.
Anyone else think we should bring back Whoopee caps?

Mr. Potato Head was conjured up in 1949, the brainchild of Brooklyn-born toy inventor George Lerner. Lerner originally came up with the idea of inserting small, pronged body parts into fruits and vegetables to create a “funny face man.” It was after WW2. Things were tight, and families made do with what they had at home. Why not take extra advantage of that victory garden!
The original toy kit cost $0.98 and contained plastic hands, feet, ears, mouths, eyes, noses, a hat, eyeglasses, and felt facial hair. You provided the potato. It was an imaginative, creative, yet nightmare inducing toy.

The 1950s cinema turned the switchblade into a symbol of street gangs and general badassery. The knife was heavily featured in films like West Side Story, and Rebel Without a Cause where it was romanticized as a instrument of rebellion and defiance. So, how did this weapon of punks become a styling tool? The 1950’s-80’s TV and movies showed dudes busting out pocket combs to give their hair a quick once over. Pocket combs were already a common pocket accoutrement, why not combine the two! Pop-culture answered the call, Enter the Fonz and the Greasers!

Created for the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893 by Frederick William Rueckheim, Cracker Jacks would become not just a hit with fairgoers, but would be the ubiquitous snack of baseball. The perfect handheld treat would launch the careers of Fredrick and his brother Louis.
The Cracker Jack name emerged organically from the excitement after every taste. “a real crackerjack!”— slang for anything exceptional.
In 1912, Reuckheim made the decision to include small prizes for kids within every box. Baseball cards, figurines, whistles, and charms were delightful surprises found among the contents of the candied corn. These little beloved prizes are still collected today. 🍿

Early Victorian and Edwardian leather handbags and purses made of alligator and crocodile emphasize the natural texture and color of the skins, often featuring head and back horns and a range of browns and tans and/or olive green. Some of these antique purses even come with taxidermied paws or heads sewn into the bag. This lovely example is from the 1940’s revival. By the 1950’s women had dyed alligator skin purses in a variety of colors. The most expensive purse in the world, a red Hermès Birking bag sold for more than $200,000, and was made from Porosus crocodile. 🐊

First created in China, but further developed by Johannes Gutenberg with the invention of the Gutenberg Press.
Gutenberg’s press used movable metal type, allowing reusable letters for faster, more efficient printing—unlike Chinese block printing which used carved blocks for each page.

The printing press accelerated the spread of knowledge, scientific ideas, and literature, fueling education, cultural shifts, and democratization of information.

Little Fly,
Thy summer’s play
My thoughtless hand
Has brushed away.

Am not I
A fly like thee?
Or art not thou
A man like me?

For I dance
And drink, and sing,
Till some blind hand
Shall brush my wing.

If thought is life
And strength and breath
And the want
Of thought is death;

Then am I
A happy fly,
If I live,
Or if I die.

-William Blake

The ballcap stands as the most accessible piece of headwear that can be worn by anyone, anywhere, and what began as a simple piece of sportswear now rests on the heads of half the world’s population. 🧢

The New York Knickerbockers sported the first known baseball caps, made from straw. Highly ineffective, the Knickerbockers ditched the straw caps a few years later for a woolen cap.
