Kaʻialua or “Lua” is a traditional Hawaiian martial art - a fighting system developed by koa, the warrior class of old Hawaiʻi. It combined strategy, hand to hand striking, bone-breaking joint locks, the use of weapons, other various wartime techniques as well as healing practices to treat frequent injury.
Once considered kapu and only practiced by chosen kingʻs guard, Kuʻialua requried mental fortitude, as well as a deep spiritual commitment, and physical technique. Masters of Lua or ʻōlohe, became the protectors of aliʻi.
Ka Hana O Ka Hua, “Fruit of Labor” is a subtle nod to the rigorous training and discipline involved in becoming a master of this craft.
