Surreal Hawthorne

Surreal Hawthorne The future will be designed by people working across disciplines. We must see the connections between the products we buy and the stories behind their journeys.

Design defines everything in our built environment, and as such I believe it is one of the most powerful tools for making the shift to my vision of a resilient and biophilic society. "A legendary hero is usually the founder of something- the founder of a new age, the founder of a new religion, the founder of a new city, the founder of a new way of life. In order to found something new, one has to

leave the old and go on a quest of the seed idea, a germinal idea that will have the potential of bringing forth that new thing."

-Joseph Campbell, The Hero with a Thousand Faces

That idea is the concept of Biophilia, meaning "love of life or living systems". In an age when humans are affecting such massive changes to global systems and decimating biodiversity at such an alarming rate, I hope to strengthen our connections to the natural world by reminding people how innate these connections really are. In a world made smaller and smaller by growing networks of communication, goods and services, we must transform ourselves from global consumers into Global Citizens. We must build truly ethical supply chains.

Okazaki Shrine in Kyoto is a shinto shrine beloved for its depictions of rabbits and significance as a shrine dedicated to fertility and childbirth. Originally established in 794 by Emperor Kanmu, it was one of the four shrines built to protect the newly established capital of Heian-kyo (present-day Kyoto) from malevolent forces.
