Two weeks before Father’s Day, June 21! Fly Fishing is the perfect sport, its not just about catching fish, it’s about freeing your mind and spirit, being one with nature! Solving a puzzle and out guessing a wily trout! The study of basic entomology proves helpful but blind luck is all one really needs! After all you have to be in the right place at the right time and thats not lying on a couch nor relaxing in your easy chair! Get your fathers out of the house with some basic fly fishing equipment and some free casting lessons or just a membership in the Houghton Fly Fishing Club! The beautiful Genesee river is one of WNY premier trout streams and a great place to start one’s fly fishing journey! Photos courtesy of HFFC member Ryan Fontaine!

Take advantage of the great fishing!
Stream reports by Jim McCarrick:
“Fished East koy today (Friday, June 5 near Gainsville. Temp at 9:30 was 61. Caddis on the water, also saw a few iso's. Not many risers to start but a few trout actively nymphing along the bottom. Saw a few BWO's come off, switched from elk hair caddis to a #20 bwo BH nymph on a 6x tippet. Fished it upstream with soft twitches as it came back, stopped counting at 12 fish. Had a very large one get off right at the net was able to bring a 17 incher to net. If you're going to fish East koy carry a supply of black, tan and green caddis as well as bwo nymphs, emergers, and duns #16 - 22. The caddis and bwo's are ever present on this stream. A small box of midges and you'll have the stream covered. If you head out in the evening and fish till dark, have some light cahills with you. You can get any of these flies at the River Dog Fly Shop.”
Tom McCormick:
Fished the Wiscoy yesterday (Tuesday, June2-3-6:00 PM. It was awesome… caddis and mayflies were taking them. Best fish was a 16 1/2 inch brown- right under the bridge in Wiscoy.
Charlie Love:
Caught this nice brown in the Genny at the mouth of Rushford lake outlet swinging a large tube fly in high and dirty water last week of May after a heavy rain!

Special thanks to Jim Logel for feeding the troops breakfasts and smash burgers and delicious grilled chicken! Our up coming trips include Ungava Bay in August (one space still available) and rumor has it the HFFC is planning a trip to Montana’s Madison and Big Horn Rivers for July 2027! All Rivers and Creeks fishing well!
Stream Report by Jim McCarrick 05/21
“Fished the genny today, great day. Water was 51F at 9:30. Took 5 on a nymph (tungsten bead walts worm, olive bead), 5 on a dry, first dry fly action this year. Plenty of mayflies, saw blue quills, bwo's, a few march browns, a 16 adams did the trick today. Plenty of rises!”

Back to the current task at hand!

Now that the distraction of rattling sabers is over we can get back to the task at hand…fly fishing! Lessons learned though! An incredible performance and run by the blue and gold…its not over till its over but …. you can’t keep losing them at the net!

Gimmes are for golf and horseshoes, hockey and fly fishing are all about getting it in the net!!

Local creeks are recovering surely but slowly! The Genny will take longer so explore the tribs first!

The reports are in from the HFFC member’s trip to the Dream Catcher Fly Fishing Resort on the West Branch of the Delaware! Tom McCormick landed a nice rainbow as soon as he arrived and another while floating the river the next day with guide Jeremy Horn! Ray Geary and his fishing buddy Craig rented there own drift boat and landed some nice browns!

Ray reported seeing some Hendricksons hatching but the fish were ignoring them! Seeing some risers Ray and Craig started headhunting with Spotlight Caddis flies with success!

Our next trip to the DCFFR is May 30 and 31. Two spots still available if anyone is interested! It will be the start of the Sulfur hatch!

If you woke up this morning excited about hitting some local streams you are out of luck! Everything is blown out, leaving only some local lakes and impoundments fishable! HFFC member George Hrycun and local fly fishing guru suggests under these conditions to use Chironomidaes, grease lined, just below the surface. Big Browns, Rainbows and Brookies are eagerly munching on them in the spring and fall in places like Allen and Harwood lakes both minutes away from our River Dog Fly Shop!

The Houghton Fly Fishing Club wishes to send a big thank you to Tim Didas for an excellent presentation on the life cycle of the Hendrickson mayfly! Tim‘s presentation, knowledge and fly tying skills were throughly enjoyed by the many HFFC members and guests in attendance!

On a less positive note the extemely wet spring, the wettest April since 2017 and the fifth wettest ever, has played havoc on the Hendrickson hatches for this season! High and muddy waters will keep anglers off the area streams again today!

The forecast for the rest of the week and into the weekend doesn’t look great as well but the fish still have to eat so go subsurface if you can’t find any hatching insects!
