At 20, K-Mart turned me down for a job. At 30, I took over that 103,000 sq ft K-Mart building.At 21, I cleaned floors for Fallas Paredes. I quit over a raise, was rehired as Head Manager 7 days later, and eventually left to start my own path. I rented small shops from my ex-boss... then opened a 40,000 sq ft store right next door to him.I expanded VACA MART across Texas and Arizona, but my biggest test was Calexico. Sam’s Club had closed down right next to a thriving Walmart. For years, I looked at that empty building, inspired by Sam Walton’s drive, and decided to see what we were truly made of.We ran three grueling 8-hour shifts around the clock for48 hours.
