The underwater wedding of Bob Smith, a diving clown, and Mary Beth Sanger, an “Aquamaid”, at the Aquarena Springs theme park in San Marcos, Texas, 1954.

This surreal underwater wedding took place at the now-defunct Aquarena Springs in San Marcos, Texas, a quirky attraction known for its underwater performances featuring “Aquamaids,” swimming pigs, and glass-bottom boat tours.

On this particular day in 1954, Bob Smith, a diving clown and frequent performer at the park, tied the knot with Mary Beth Sanger, one of the park’s iconic mermaid performers. The ceremony was held completely underwater in the park's Marine Theatre, with the bridal party donning full wedding attire and using air hoses to breathe as fish swam by.

This whimsical event wasn’t just a publicity stunt—it was a reflection of the uniquely American fascination with novelty and spectacle in postwar entertainment. Aquarena Springs became famous for pushing the boundaries of performance art, blending kitsch with aquatic acrobatics.
