Something Wonderful is a Broad Ripple-based custom alterations studio owned and operated by master seamstress Sarah Knochel. We can custom create or expertly alter any garment. We love working with brides and mothers of the bride and groom. We're also happy to work with kids. Something Wonderful works by appointment only.

We took some lace from a bride’s mother’s wedding dress and we added it to a robe for her to have on her special day 🥰

Sometimes a dress just doesn’t quite fit one bustle or another. In these cases, we may opt for a bustle combination with two types. This dress is a simple crepe dress, except with a long lace train. Normally on this type of dress with a plain train we would just do a french or ballroom bustle, but we want to show off the lace. This is where the combination comes in. The sides are still pulled up into a french bustle, but we pull out the center to bring into an american bustle.
This has been a fairly popular style lately, so we thought to show this off, and to show what we can do with a more unique train.

A lot of brides see the price of our veils vs the price of Amazon veils and are shocked. They often don’t understand the differences in quality that make up that price. So let’s talk about it!
Every bride is entitled to make their own decision for their budget and needs, we just want that decision to be an informed one. There’s nothing wrong per se with either of the Amazon veils shown, they are just lower quality that match their lower price. We pride ourselves in handmaking the highest quality veils we can, and so our prices match that.

The third standard bustle we do: the french bustle! This one is similar to the ballroom bustle because it has ties, but it’s a bit different. It has the ties on the train higher up, so it lifts from the middle to create a “bubble” and the hem is still shown. This bustle is often used on the same kinds of dresses that a ballroom may be used on, but it creates a different look that many brides prefer!

Apologies for the background noise, we film in our active workroom so there’s not much getting around it!

Zipping up a wedding dress may not seem like it needs a tutorial, but there a few extra things to know. First, it’s very important to do the hook and eye at the top first. We fit these dresses super tight to look best so it may be difficult, but it will go. Having the hook and eye done up first means you don’t have to hold the top together as you zip, making it much easier. Next, as you zip the waistline is often the hardest part. Many casual dresses have this same issue, so of course wedding dresses are no different. So it’s okay if it’s a bit hard, but it will zip. Lastly, smooth out the top of her back and make sure everything is sitting just as it should!

Recently we had the opportunity to do a very fun, unique project! A client brought in her mother’s wedding dress, and we turned it into a christening gown for her grandkids! We’re very happy with how it turned out, and we love being able to bring ideas like this to life.
