The after-school hour is doing more than you think.
8,230 kids, ages 9 & 10, brain-scanned & followed for a year. Hands-on activities done with other people tracked with fewer psychiatric symptoms and more gray matter in frontoparietal regions [ attention, problem-solving.] Solo screen activities went the other way. (Translational Psychiatry, 2026)
A separate study of 28,712 7th graders found the same shape: after-school arts, sports & clubs tracked with more life satisfaction and optimism, less anxiety & depression. Two-plus hours of screens tracked with the opposite, more strongly in GIRLS.
Best outcomes: activities in, screens under two hours.
The American Academy of Pediatrics AAP has a word for this. Not banning — crowding back in.
20 minutes. It doesn’t have to be our kit. It has to be their hands. And it’s better when you’re sitting there too.
