This winter I experimented with a whole cloth graffiti quilt design.

Whole cloth means it’s a solid piece of fabric and any design is added through the quilting and the negative space between the quilt design.

Graffiti quilting is a style of free motion quilting (using the sewing machine to doodle the design). It’s a random mix of circular designs (flowers, feathers and swirls) combined with linear elements like arrows, squares and straight lines. The designs build off of previous designs, or are made to fit between other elements, creating a one of kind design. (I did print and trace the letters, but free hand quilted over them.)

And then of course my 9 year old wanted the wall hanging for herself. I compromised and made her own design for her door … along with the monthly gnome door hanging 😂 He is appliquéd, meaning the shape is cut out of fabric and then stitched on top of the background. And yes, I am making a new one for each month of the year!

This one has been a work in progress for quite some time! This started as a block of the month so it was mailed to me in sections. Each piece is careful sewn onto a piece of paper and then the paper is torn off. I also struggled with the quilting on this one so it sat for some time before I found the inspiration to finish it. Some of those tiny pieces (particularly in the wheel) were difficult to sew and again were difficult to quilt over. But Sewphia is finished and makes a beautiful addition to my sewing space.

These were gifted today so I can finally share! The alphabet quilt may very well be my favorite baby shower gift. It was a fun & creative make. The blue patchwork quilt has a longer story …

My grandmother created matching quilts for my brother and myself (photo of the original in the comments). She also made one for my cousin, who didn’t have any kids at the time. But my grandma was always thinking ahead and wanted all of the kids to be treated fairly. Deep down it was probably a sign that she knew she wasn’t going to be around to see all of her great grandkids born. Anyway, when my mom cleaned out the apartment after my grandfather passed away, she gave me a bag full of sewing supplies. It included about a thousand safety pins (no exaggeration) and leftover fabrics from the baby blankets. Since my cousin is expecting his first child, I used the fabrics to create a new quilt. Some of the squares were already cut and sewn together so it truly feels like it was a quilt my grandmother started and I got to finish.

Gifted these two quilts to my nieces yesterday. I inverted the colors so there was no fabric waste - and so the girls could tell them apart. I started working on them over the summer - long before my brother mentioned they needed new bedding, so that worked out well. Funny fact - sewing in the round is challenging and this pattern is called a drunkard path 😂😂

This is actually fairly accurate! Most people don’t believe me and aren’t willing to pay this. 🤷🏼‍♀️
