The Shift Dress will always have Melissa's heart.

It was the first women's dress she designed, back in 2012, starting with the classic 3/4-sleeve navy stripe. Since then the Shift has picked up short-sleeve and sleeveless versions and more prints than any of us can count. I was 26 when I heard a word I never expected to hear at that age: melanoma.

After surgery, I had a fresh scar, my dermatologist’s advice to start wearing sun protective clothing, and so many questions. What is it? Where do I buy it? Why have I never heard of it?

I was working in fashion, so I went looking. Everything I found was scratchy, synthetic and nothing you’d want to put on and feel good in. And I kept asking: does it have to be ugly to work?
