I was seconds away from dialing 911 on a biker climbing my neighborās balconyāuntil I saw what he was carrying.
My finger hovered over the phone as I stared out the kitchen window. Three stories up, a huge tattooed man in boots and a leather vest balanced on a narrow railing. At first, it looked like a break-in.
Then my stomach sank.
He wasnāt here to steal.
He was holding a bowl of food for a German Shepherd trapped on that balconyāfor six days.
The dog had been left behind after its owner was evicted, barely standing, starving, whimpering for help. Calls to animal control and police went nowhere. Apartment management said they couldnāt legally intervene. And all we could do was watch.
Then this morning, a motorcycle roared into the lot. The biker stared up at the balcony, marched inside, and confronted the building supervisor.
āThat dog is dying,ā he growled. āIām not asking permission. Iām telling you Iām going to get that animal.ā
āYou canāt break into someoneās unit,ā stammered the supervisor.
āThen call the police,ā he said, and walked away.
I rushed to the window.
He pulled something from his backpackāand my heart stopped.
