A common problem with older electric machines, sometimes the wiring fails while looking completely normal.

Had this Featherweight in for a problem with the light: it flickered and most of the time wouldn't stay on, jiggling the light bulb would intermittently bring it back, though briefly. Wires at the plug looked fine, then I took apart the socket to reveal that all the insulation had melted away and it was shorting itself out. Unfortunately, a closer look inside the outer casing revealed that the insulation around the wires was crumbling and needed a full replacement, so that's what it got, new wires and terminals for this old machine. Just the little things to put it back into service.

Taking a ton of detailed pictures when breaking a machine down really helps with assembly, you can never take too many pictures. Old technology really makes things simple too 😉.

We will work on getting it to make stitches another evening, this project isn't quite finished yet.

Enjoy!

Our most anticipated conservation yet has begun.

Part of an ongoing research project into the Howe Sewing Machine Company, this machine is likely a 2nd or 3rd variant of the model A. Details and information has been pretty scarce so we're going to say this machine was most likely manufactured between 1857-1861.

There's always a lot of trepidation fully taking apart a rare machine but the key is to go slow and take a ton of pictures.

Updates to come after cleaning and parts polishing.

Apologies, but some major deficiencies have been discovered with the paint for the current Featherweight and we will have to strip it back to bare metal and start over.

Unfortunately, this means there will need to be a color change in order to avoid having a repeat situation and it won't be available until after Christmas.
