It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that Jeanne Chelsen, wife of our founder Mark Chelsen, has passed away.

Most of you know Mark's Dancewear as a shop, but without Jeanne, it wouldn't exist. Jeanne was a lifelong dancer who ran her own dance studio — the same studio in whose lower level Mark's Dancewear opened its doors in 2002. After her own pain and injury from poorly-fitted pointe shoes, she pushed Mark to do something about it. He listened, learning everything he could about fitting dance shoes properly, and built a business around making sure no dancer would go through what she did.

Jeanne never worked behind our counter, but her story lives here every day — every pointe shoe fitting we do carries a piece of it.

Our thoughts are with Mark and the whole Chelsen family. Jeanne’s experience inspired Mark to build something that would serve dancers for generations.

Service and memorial details will follow. In the meantime, please keep Mark and the family in your thoughts.
