Yā€™all, so my best friendā€™s daughter recently got married to a woman, and my best friend didnā€™t show up to the wedding, didnā€™t say congratulations, nothing. She said she doesnā€™t support something that isnā€™t of God. Fast forward, now my best friend is pregnant and had a baby shower, and I didnā€™t go. She called me mad, going off, talking about ā€œSerenity, you wrong for that,ā€ and I told her you laid down before marriage with a man, which is a sin too, and I donā€™t support anything that isnā€™t of God. The truth nobody wants to hear is that I donā€™t think my husband loves me, I think heā€™s addicted to trying to save me. Thereā€™s a difference. Love has standards. Love has boundaries. Love doesnā€™t keep letting somebody drag you through humiliation and then call it commitment. But addiction? Addiction will make you stay anywhere and call it purpose. That man stays after every outburst, every ugly truth, every moment I make it clear I donā€™t honor him the way a wife probably should. My girls keep saying he must enjoy pain because ainā€™t no way somebody keeps signing up for this much disrespect unless they get something out of it. Maybe theyā€™re right. The more I think about it, the more I realize my husband doesnā€™t even want a real marriage. He wants a role to play. He wants to be the long-suffering good guy, the patient provider, the devoted father, the man who ā€œstood by his womanā€ no matter how hard she was to love. That sounds noble until you realize itā€™s just another kind of weakness. Because a strong man would have checked out the minute he realized I was done respecting him. A strong man would have set boundaries, demanded peace, or walked away. Mine just keeps standing there with sad eyes and open arms like Iā€™m supposed to be touched by his loyalty. Iā€™m not. Iā€™m irritated. My girls said he worships dysfunction because it makes him feel needed, and honestly that sounds about right.
