Here’s the story 🌹

This is a truly one-of-a-kind dress — hand-dyed and handmade in the 1960s by Carolyn Lee at her legendary Sunset Boulevard custom shop, Mihitabel. Known as “LA’s Queen of Tie-Dye”. Carolyn created wearable art that captivated the era’s most iconic musicians. She never repeated a piece always making one of a kind. This particular dress features a large eye at the hem, two large mandalas, edge rimmed yoke like patterns, winged V’s and stars -which are a distinctive and playful motif she incorporated into many of her designs. - look through slides to see some polaroids of her from the 60’s and 70’s in similar dresses she made courtesy of

Carolyn was a coveted tailor for artists such as The Eagles, Jim Croce, America, Bread, The Beach Boys, John Denver, Three Dog Night, and Sweetwater’s Nancy Nevins and Alex Del Zoppo — who later became Carolyn’s husband. Also her dyes are notorious for grillcloths used by bands like NRPS and The Dead.

The shop opened in the 1960’s and closed in the early 1970s due to a family illness. These rare garments have been carefully stored since then -and is in amazing condition.

Available. One of a kind. Link below. This Madewell western shirt features my handcrafted appliqué from the original vintage fabric estate of Carolyn Lee’s ‘Mihitabel’ collection.

This is my twist on her appliqué men’s western shirts. While exploring her fabric archive and polaroids, it became clear that her talent went far beyond tie-dye, highlighting her impressive quilting and appliqué skills. She crafted a variety of sunrise landscapes. I wanted to make my own playful art inspired by her classic western shirt deisgns for men. (See piece and original Polaroid’s in slides.)
This piece celebrates the creative energy of the 1960’s and 70’s at the Mihitabel shop which was located at 3707 Sunset Blvd. This enclave was known at the time as “The Other End Of Sunset”. The art community at The Junction in Silver Lake and Echo Park was in full blossom, where every item was truly one of a kind and crafted with such care and attention.
Shining light on her creative spirit has become a core passion of mine.
My custom shop is open. Please DM to create a custom piece just for you.
Much Love -RAR ☀️
