"BAYANIHAN" refers to a fundamental aspect of Filipino culture: working together as a community to achieve one common goal. It's been almost a year since my family hosted a community pantry in my home town of San Pedro, Laguna, Philippines. The purpose of a community pantry is to share something with others and take only what you need. I was grateful for the vegetable vendor that donated a bunch of vegetables instead of it going to waste. By a collective effort, we were able to provide food to 200 people.
As we ease into life back into normalcy, I often find myself reflecting on the positive effects the pandemic had in our community. The pandemic allowed people to revert back to their hobbies such as cooking, sewing, sports, etc. There were many people that started their businesses. People started to learn new skills and to read books again.
The pandemic was a blessing in disguise for some, but not all and it also brought out the best and worst in people but made us realize that we can support each other AND sustain ourselves as a community.
